Summary

This position is located within ARS, Headquarters, Administrative and Financial Management, Information Technology Services Division, Office the Deputy ACIO, HQ and Field Operations Branch, National Germplasm Resources Laboratory in Beltsville, MD.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates deposits from numerous U.S. GRIN-Global contributors into the source code repository and oversees system and software installations, upgrades, and deploys releases.
  • Coordinates delivery of GRIN-Global server components to end-users in collaboration with ARS and USDA network and infrastructure engineers, information security services, and governance administration.
  • Meets with customers and stakeholders to collect information about system business requirements and translates them into programming specifications that include use cases and requirements.
  • Participates in IT systems development, including analysis and research, in-house support, ad-hoc reporting and data visualization, short-term development efforts, and assistance on other IT projects.
  • Provides expertise on future systems development and deployment.
  • Conducts pre-production testing and quality assurance protocols, and diagnoses performance problems of production software, including debugging and minor modifications of source code.
  • Works closely with the training, documentation, user interface, and quality control personnel in the DBMU and the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS).

    Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

    GS-12:
    Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience overseeing system and software installations or upgrades; working with customized software that was developed and delivered on a Microsoft platform; and providing technical analysis and quality assurance support.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
