MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, English, Marketing, or related field

Experience
  • Minimum seven (7) years of relevant, progressive work experience developing written communications including, but not limited to, experience in research, conducting interviews, newsletter writing and reporting, creating internal communication materials, communications plans/campaigns, and senior level customer communications in various media such as electronic, web based and hard copy material.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Journalism or Communications is preferred

SUMMARY

The Internal Business Operations (IBOP) Senior Communications Writer/Editor is responsible for combining high-level research, writing and editing as well as project management for success. The incumbent supports multiple departments within the Office of Planning, Performance, and Improvement (PPI) through the production of creative, thought-provoking materials in a variety of print and multi-media formats, employee digital collateral, newsletter articles and features, talking points and presentations. The Sr. Communications Writer/Editor also contributes to strategic planning and decision making concerning internal content that fulfills the mission of WMATA by keeping employees informed and engaged with varied issues and topics.

The incumbent collaborates with WMATA External Relations to respond to Executive and Board correspondence from customers and stakeholders, The Sr. Communications Writer/Editor conducts internal research and analysis, prepares information and drafts other forms of communications including newsletter posts, communications plans, and supports internal (employee) customer service needs for writing support. This position has the latitude of independent judgment and action within established guidelines. The Sr. Communications Writer/Editor works closely with IBOP Senior Management Team leaders as well as the EVP of IBOP.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides advanced level expertise to edit responses to IBOP customer inquiries which includes executive level responses. Updates IBOP Customer Care database regularly with new content to track and analyze inquiries for service improvement.
  • Conducts research, drafts and edits customer responses on behalf of the board and the EMT and IBOP SMT. The responses may include sensitive and confidential information.
  • Creates and edits material for employee newsletters, factsheets, digital content, reports, bullets, and presentations.
  • Produces communications and writing in multiple formats, from concept to execution. Also, proofreads, formats documents and performs style review of materials.
  • Translates complicated concepts into clear, compelling language for audiences ranging from employees and stakeholders.
  • Understands, supports and reinforces IBOP and the Authority wide standards for message content, consistency and tone. Assists in identifying the appropriate communications vehicle and timing.
  • Stay abreast of developments relevant to WMATA's position on policies and programs and to reflect the status of these items in responses prepared by the Executive Correspondence Team.
  • Strategically partners with others to assist with the development of internal IBOP communications plan.
  • Creates an organized, functional ‘store' of needed information, statistics, etc. for various communications, including script writing and messaging for multi-channel communication use.
  • Understands the subject-matter experts, coordinates the gathering of content, assisting the writing and editing of responses as needed.
  • Coordinates and tracks multiple reviews of documents, materials and project status reports, keeping WMATA offices up-to-date on progress through delivery.
  • Works quickly and independently, meeting all required deadlines to ensure prompt response.
  • Develops professional reports and presentations that target WMATA's stakeholders and internal customers. Writes, edits, reviews and produces high-quality public communications materials.
  • Develops and implements communications and outreach plans. Develops timelines, identifies internal and external stakeholders and prepares core messaging documents. Coordinates research and outreach efforts to include development of targeted, multi-media communication tactics and materials.
  • Collaborates with internal partners, including IBOP departments and customer service as the subject matter expert, regarding planned projects and policies impacting Metro customers.
