Position Information
The Department of Parks and Recreation i s seeking a Senior Center Program Director to ensure the quality and content of programs through design, development, implementation, and evaluation of a full range of programming for the Senior (55+) Programs at the Walter Reed Community Center. This employee will also assess needs, analyze results, and develop programs for all senior center activities and special events in concert with Program goals and core elements. Additionally, this position will provide supervision to staff and volunteers, serve on interdisciplinary projects and teams, and oversee the daily operation of the Social 60+ Café congregate meal program.

Specific duties include:

  • Managing the daily operation of the Senior (55+) Center Programs; including conducting program evaluations, maintaining service agreements, managing administrative records, submitting monthly and quarterly reports, ensuring set-up of rooms with equipment and supplies, and coordinating scheduling and space assignments for senior center programs and for activities;
  • Monitoring allocated budget and tracking expenditures, managing budget and administrative records, maintaining/monitoring inventories of supplies and equipment , ordering equipment, arranging for resources, and reporting equipment repairs;
  • Assessing needs of potential and actual participants, developing programs with divisional and departmental objectives, including supervising some senior adult activities in the Center, and identifying and cultivating new participant leadership and empowerment through advisory councils;
  • Supervising and training the 55+ center staff and volunteers, coordinating the use of volunteers, providing feedback, and coaching as well as completing performance appraisals;
  • Creating fliers and marketing materials for programs including writing descriptions for 55+ Guide, and producing and distributing publicity materials (newsletter, calendars, flyers etc.) for programs including 55+ Guide, Center, and activities;
  • Creating a setting that fosters senior empowerment, exploration of new roles for 55+ program participants, cultivating volunteerism among seniors and stakeholders, including connecting the work of the advisory committee to the Senior Adult Council and participants in the program;
  • Managing the Social 60+ Café Congregate Meal Program, including staff supervision, daily operations of meal service, transportation, and activities, and ensuring safe food handling practices, proper documentation/reporting, and evaluation;
  • Performing operations administrative duties to ensure compliance with all County policies and procedures; including maintaining accuracy of participants and overseeing membership registrations and renewals and class sign-ups at Center;
  • Engaging in Civic Engagement, participating in training and other developmental opportunities, and practicing established Arlington Civic Engagement Guidelines; and
  • Providing advocacy, education, resource referral, and consultation with staff and customers; including keeping resources current and providing information for services requested and tracking monthly social service information and referrals.

  • Experience developing nurturing relationships and building on individual strengths, and creating an atmosphere where different perspectives, opinions and positions are welcomed, encouraged, and fully explored.

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Gerontology, Social Work, Therapeutic Recreation, Adult Education or a closely related Human service field; and
  • One (1) year of experience in management of recreation programs and activities in a senior adult and/or recreation setting.
Substitution: Additional education may be substituted for experience or additional responsible experience may be substituted for education.

Desirable: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the following:
  • Recreation program assessment, design, planning, implementation, and evaluation;
  • Working with diverse communities;
  • Bilingual skills (fluency in English/Spanish);
  • Computer skills, Microsoft Office suite, and office equipment; and
  • Developing relationships with community organizations, service providers, citizens advisory groups and professional partners.

Special Requirements
A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

The Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid Driver's license, or be willing to use alternative means of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. Applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
