Position Information
This Epidemiologist is a member of the Public Health Communicable Disease (CD) Program, comprised of the Disease Surveillance and Investigation (DSI), Tuberculosis (TB), and Newcomer Health Programs. The CD Program works to prevent and control the spread of communicable disease in the community. The employee will serve as a key member of the team focusing on conducting investigations within the DSI Program, making DSI assignments for team epidemiologists and public health nurses (PHNs), and working to prevent and control the spread of communicable disease in the community.

Responsibilities include:
  • Receiving reports of communicable diseases, prioritizing investigations with urgency given to outbreak and rapidly reportable diseases, and assigning to CD team members for investigation;
  • Investigating and managing reportable disease cases and outbreaks of any disease, with a wide spectrum of complexity including site visits to outbreak locations;
  • Providing consultation to Public Health Nurses and Epidemiology Specialist who investigate communicable diseases;
  • Using MS Excel and additional software programs to conduct data analysis on patterns of incidence and reportable disease in Arlington County;
  • Serving as training and subject matter expert to program staff and community partners related to epidemiology, disease control measures and data collection and analysis;
  • Participating in emergency planning and response and utilizing the Incident Command System when indicated for outbreak investigation; and
  • Sharing oversight of the day-to-day operations of the DSI program with the Program Epidemiologist.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics or related field; and
  • Some experience in epidemiology to include experience related to communicable diseases, preferably in a public health setting which included program administration and/or program management.
Desirable: Preference maybe given to candidate with one or more of the following;

  • Master's Degree Public Health or Epidemiology;
  • At least one year of experience in data collection and analysis in an Epidemiology program;
  • Working in a public health setting;
  • Conducting communicable disease investigations and/or
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish;

Special Requirements
A pre-employment background check will be conducted on candidates selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

The candidate selected will be required to complete a State of Virginia Central Registry check.
