Job Description

The Washington Post needs a left- and right-brained wordsmith to help us connect with new readers and persuade them to support our mission. This person will be the main writer and voice of one of the world's highest-profile subscription businesses: a vital member of the newly formed Brand Creative Shop and a partner to the Subscriptions team. The growth copywriter will report to The Washington Post Copy Director.

This role is dynamic: you will find creative ways to resonate with readers by choosing just the right words for social and emerging media; thewashingtonpost.com pages; emails and major paid ad campaigns. You will enjoy a strong feedback loop of results and develop a nuanced understanding of what works - and what doesn't.

Motivation
  • Your passion is the written word and specifically, persuasion: your writing inspires action.
  • You are strategic and conceptual, rooting your work in the creative brief and writing with your target audience and the publishing platform (e.g. Tik Tok, email, website) in mind.
  • You enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects at once.
  • You are a true partner, soliciting input, feedback and data to write copy that works.
  • You would love to debate the Oxford comma.

Responsibilities
  • Brainstorm with the Creative and Subscription teams to conceptualize breakthrough marketing campaigns that drive app downloads, bring listeners to our podcasts, or enhance brand perceptions.
  • Ensure direct-response copy is fresh, on-brand and effective, motivating readers to explore more and subscribe.
  • Edit and proofread copy for accuracy.
  • Build relationships with other copywriters and creatives within The Post to develop an internal source for brainstorming and sharing information.
  • Help shape and improve creative briefs.

Qualifications
  • 3-6 years of experience writing marketing copy for digital media
  • High aptitude for language, including spelling, grammar and style
  • Excellent communication skills, including active listening
  • Direct response and subscriptions marketing experience preferred

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

The innovation doesn't end in the Newsroom - dozens of teams power The Washington Post. We are now hiring the next innovator - how will you Impact Tomorrow?
