Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a results-driven, detail-oriented Senior Product Manager to lead the product development of our audio, video, and photo experiences. This person will oversee the asset management systems that our newsroom uses as well as on-site and distributed content platform experiences surrounding our growing suite of podcasts, visual forensic storytelling and rich photo storytelling. This role is central to empowering our Editorial teams to showcase our high-quality visual storytelling and unlocking the ability to publish great journalism quickly and efficiently to our growing subscriber base.

In this role, you will develop a deep understanding of newsroom users and how they work and identify ways to improve their workflows. You will balance support with innovation when it comes to product development and execution. You will collaborate with other product managers in the Core User Experience team, who are iteratively enhancing our homepage, story templates, apps, and live experience. You will work in an Agile development environment to identify opportunities, define feature requirements, execute against release plans, and proactively remove obstacles to deliver on product and business strategies. In collaboration with stakeholders, you will develop recommendations for how we can streamline our existing toolset, evolve our tools to scale our digital coverage strategy and empower our newsroom to showcase the journalism that keeps our subscribers coming back.

This position is remote-friendly, but Washington, D.C.-area is preferred. Candidates interested in remote working need to have a proven track record of strong communication, organization, and collaboration.

Responsibilities
  • Align opportunities, features and functionality to team and company objectives by partnering with product leadership to define the product roadmap.
  • Identify meaningful improvements and deliver value that aligns with their plans, strategies, and business goals by collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to gather requirements, prioritize the backlog, and plan sprints.
  • Generate actionable insights and identify opportunities the evolve your product area to meet user needs by gathering and interpreting quantitative and qualitative inputs from our user research, insights and analytics teams
  • Ensure your product hits key success metrics and communicate progress to stakeholders by tracking performance and analyzing data insights, making necessary tweaks and adjustments to strategy as needed to maintain high performance.
  • Lead through influence by building trust and alignment with clear, proactive communication about your plans, progress, successes, and setbacks.
  • Refine how we empower our Editorial teams to enhance coverage for subscribers by collaborating closely with stakeholders in Editorial, as well as with other product managers, to identify opportunities for enhancement or improvement.
  • Ensure seamless rollouts for our users by testing products at various stages of development.


Requirements
  • 3+ years experience in media, preferably as a product owner, product manager or program manager with experience in digital media or consumer-facing digital applications that require internal tooling as part of the product
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems in a fast-paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail
  • Experience monitoring product performance and managing troubleshooting efforts in real time.
  • Experience analyzing customer feedback, user research and performance data to set key performance indicators and guide product feature development.
  • Ability to work well across disciplines and build partnerships that result in better product outcomes
  • Exceptional communication, writing, and presentation skills that reflect the ability to communicate complex systems and concepts to editorial, sales, technical and executive teams with the appropriate terminology for stakeholders.
  • Experience using quantitative and qualitative data to identify user needs and inform solutions that guide product feature development
  • Working knowledge of industry standard software such as Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Jira, Confluence
  • Experience collaborating with large, remote teams using communication tools such as Slack and Zoom
