Summary

About the Position: The Electrician position is located at the Department of Public Works (DPW), Joint Base Myer - Henderson Hall, Virginia.

Joint Base Myer is a 15 minute commute to/from the Arlington National Cemetery Metro Station, a 10-15 minute commute to/from the Rosslyn, Virginia Metro Station, and is accessible by bus transportation. The installation is approximately 7 miles from Washington D.C. and a short distance from major roadways and express highways.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a journeyman electrician, installs, maintains, and repairs electric wiring systems, related switches, distribution panels and outlet boxes.
  • Follow maintenance schedules and inspections or work orders, performs maintenance services, diagnoses system or equipment malfunction and repairs as necessary.
  • Test circuits and equipment by use of voltmeter, ampmeter, wattmeter, megger, and ohmmeter.
  • Recommends designs for the layout sketch of required electrical circuits, wires new test setups, installs strain gauge circuits and recording instruments.

  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 20 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an ELECTRICIAN without more than normal supervision. I have performed difficult or complicated electrical maintenance and repair work that required reading and interpreting blue prints, maps and /or other built type drawings or engineering sketches with little supervision. I have installed, repaired and troubleshot new and existing electric wiring systems, related switches, distribution panels and outlet boxes; followed maintenance schedules and inspections and/or work orders; performed maintenance services, diagnoses system or equipment and advised others in the performance of these tasks - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Moderately heavy physical effort is exerted. Works aloft at ground level, in ground trenches and manholes, on ladders, scaffolding, platforms and other hard to reach places. Work requires bending, stooping, and standing for long periods. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body is needed in installing, repairing and testing electrical equipment in confined spaces. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries with assistance objects that weigh more than 40 pounds.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside. Incumbent is exposed to extreme weather conditions and high noise levels. Occasionally exposed to possible injury from falling, electrical shock, and burns. Frequently exposed to strains from awkward positions, and cuts and bruises. To reduce the dangers and irritations from exposure to harmful substances and conditions, the employee follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment, such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, face masks, goggles, and protective clothing.
