Responsibilities

If selected for this position, you will serve as a Legal Assistant (OA) for the United States Attorney's Office, Western District of Virginia. Typical work assignments will include:
  • Examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels;
  • Proofreading and cite-checking legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents.
  • Composing original letters that do not require legal interpretations but do require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology.
  • Obtaining needed information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources, and submitting completed legal documents to the appropriate attorney or, in limited cases, directly to the court.
  • Assisting in conducting factual research on individuals and companies using computerized databases and other sources.
  • Evaluating debt collection documents and records for mathematical accuracy, to verify that payment transactions are properly documented and to identify any discrepancies.
  • Developing, analyzing and evaluating information regarding debtors financial assets.
  • Reviewing and analyzing claims for legal merit and compliance with the Federal Debt Collection Procedures Act.
  • Assembling and organizing files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

To be qualified for the GS-05 position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in federal service; or four years of education above the high school level; or a combination of both specialized experience and education as explained below.

Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties: experience reviewing legal documents such as complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, discovery responses, and subpoenas for accuracy and completeness; typing and formatting correspondence and forms; maintaining file systems; and obtaining needed information from files or general reference sources.

Combining Education and Experience: Successfully completed post-high school education may be used to meet the total one year of specialized experience requirement equivalent to the GS-4 grade level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

To be qualified for the GS-06 position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in federal service.

Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties: providing support to attorneys by reviewing legal documents such as complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels for completeness of factual information; assists by preparing and organizing evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial; conducts factual and routine legal research in legal/non-legal databases and composes routine original letters not requiring legal interpretation but requires a knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology such as transmittal of pleadings, request for extension of time in certain cases.

To be qualified for the GS-07 position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in federal service.

Specialized experience is defined as experience providing trial support to attorneys by examining, preparing and processing technical correspondence, preparing pleading, stipulations, motions, briefs, affidavits and other legal documents; assembling tables of authority and table of contents for legal briefs; preparing evidence summaries that indicates probable violations of federal laws; conducting factual and legal research in legal and non-legal databases; providing requested information, developing, analyzing and evaluating information on debtors financial assets; developing, analyzing and evaluating financial information on debtors to determine their present and future payment potential and entering and tracking financial data in automated systems and spreadsheets. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
