Responsibilities
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) Surgical Care Clinical Center (SCCC) functions as a licensed independent practitioner collaborating with Physicians, peers and appropriate others in the health care community to develop and implement individualized patient treatment plans. NP conducts history and Physical evaluations for all Veterans who require surgical intervention. Support all surgical sub-specialties by ensuring that all surgical candidates receive the proper workup in order to medical clear them for surgery. Order and follow-up on lab work; order and complete consults; interact with 13 different surgical specialties; work with Nurse Case Managers to ensure patients are ready for surgery.
The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for facilitating the fulfillment of the VAMHCS mission, vision, and values. The incumbent performs at an advanced level of nursing practice characterized by increased complexity of clinical decision-making. The NP provides direct patient care to specific patient populations. The incumbent is a skilled health care provider who utilizes critical judgment in the performance of comprehensive health assessments, differential diagnosis, ordering of diagnostic tests and the prescribing of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment in the direct management of acute and chronic illness and disease according to their scope of practice. The NP may provide specialized treatments to specific patient populations. His/her practice promotes wellness and prevents illness and injury. The NP works autonomously and in the interdisciplinary team as a resource and consultant. The role of this provider may include conducting research, providing education, and contributing to public policy. The NP functions in diverse areas of practice including but not limited to acute /chronic care, primary care, and geriatrics. The incumbent is responsible for providing care that is consistent with ANA Standards of Advanced Nursing Practice within the Clinical Center/Service Line across a complex multi-hospital system. The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the provision of high-quality, customer-focused, cost effective care to specific patient populations within the Surgical Care Clinical Center of the VAMHCS. The incumbent is accountable to the Chief, Perioperative Services, Surgical Care Clinical Center for all issues that affect patient care within the Surgical Care Clinical Center and is accountable to the Surgical Care Clinical Center Chief Nurse for nursing practice. The NP ensures compliance of advanced nursing practice with all applicable local, community, VISN or National professional statues and regulations. The incumbent ensures that the practice of nursing is consistent with external standards such as JCAHO and internal standards such as the Clinical Practice Guidelines and the Performance Measures for preventive health and chronic disease management. The incumbent assesses the educational needs of specific patient populations and develops and implements a related plan of care. The NP collaborates with other Surgical Care Clinical Center Nurse Practitioners and health care providers throughout the VAMHCS and community to exchange knowledge and share clinical expertise.

Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. - Nurse Practitioners. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.]
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. - Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
