Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, or related field


Experience
  • Minimum seven (7) years of relevant, progressive work experience developing written communications including, but not limited to, experience in research, conducting interviews, newsletter writing and reporting, internal communications/plans, and senior level customer communications including electronic, web based and hard copy material.

Certification/Licensure
  • N/A

Preferred
  • Master's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, or related field.
  • Background in visual communications techniques
  • CRM experience preferred
  • Adobe CS6 software
  • Constant Contact Software or similar

Job Summary

The Senior Communications Writer/Editor is responsible for combining high-level research, writing and editing as well as project management for success. The incumbent will support multiple departments within the Office of Customer Care through the production of creative, thought-provoking materials in a variety of print and multi-media formats, including executive level customer responses, employee digital collateral, newsletter articles and features, talking points and presentations as needed. The Senior Communications Writer/Editor will also contribute to strategic planning and decision making concerning internal content that fulfills the mission of Metro by keeping employees informed and engaged with varied issues/topics.

Specifically, this role supports Employee Communications, Customer Service and the Office of Customer Care communications and writing in multiple formats, from concept to execution. Duties beyond writing and editing include: proofreading, document formatting, and style review. This position reports to the Senior Director of Customer Care and works closely with the Employee Communications and Customer Service team and others. The Senior Communications Writer/Editor must establish and nurture cooperative internal working relationships at all levels throughout the organization including key operations offices such as Rail, Bus and Metro Access Transportation.

Essential Functions
  • Provides advanced level expertise to edit existing database of responses to customer inquiries, while updating the database regularly with new content as needed. Incorporates the use of WMATA Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software to track executive correspondence.
  • Creates and edits material for CARE projects and/or initiatives, materials in support of Employee Communications, Customer Service and the Office of Customer Care. Examples include: multiple newsletters, factsheets, digital content, scripting customer responses, and employee presentations.
  • Translates complicated concepts into clear, compelling language for audiences ranging from employees, customers and stakeholders.
  • Understands, supports and reinforces Authority wide standard for message content, consistency and tone. Provides help with identifying the appropriate communications vehicle and timing.
  • Strategically partners to assist with the development of internal communications plan.
  • Creates an organized, functional ‘store' of needed information, statistics, etc. for various communication, including script writing and messaging for multi-channel communication use.
  • Assists in the research, drafting and editing of executive customer responses on behalf of the board and the EMT. The responses include sensitive and confidential information.
  • Understands the appropriate subject-matter experts, coordinates the gathering of content, assisting the writing and editing of responses as needed.
  • Coordinates multiple reviews, keeping WMATA offices up -to-date on progress through delivery.
  • Works with writers to improve customer responses and articles through revision and execution.
