Responsibilities

The incumbent will perform standard examinations, evaluate the nature of critical and emergency procedures, and maintains records and film files of patients examined. Duties may include the following but are not limited to:
  • Performs complex examinations and treatment procedures.
  • Performs complex vascular ultrasound examinations renal artery duplex, mesenteric duplex, venous mapping, vascular system, lower arterial extremities, Doppler exam, etc.
  • Advises radiologists or referring physician of significant abnormalities that would require their immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing examination.
  • Performs ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, neck, chest and extremities, retroperitoneal space for the purpose of acquiring high quality examinations that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical disorders.
  • Makes multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments in operation of equipment to insure accurate results. Based on Radiologic findings, determines necessary ultrasonic procedures to yield definitive diagnostic findings.
  • Explains examinations to be performed to the patients so that an understanding of the purpose of the study as well as any requirements of the patients are thoroughly understood. This is done so that an adequate ultrasound study may be obtained in an effort to get diagnostic examinations for the purpose of treatment and diagnosis of disorders.
  • Gathers related information such as patient chart, x-rays, etc., so that correlation of examinations to other studies may be made by the radiologist in diagnosis and recommendation of treatment for medical disorders.
  • Assists quality assurance technologists in performing quality assurance testing on the ultrasound unit using phantoms, test tools, test check lists, etc. for the purpose of assuring peak performance of the ultrasound equipment. Maintains records of the quality assurance testing so that easy reference is available should servicing be necessary :(weekly basis)
  • Incumbent will display a cooperative attitude and will effectively work together to implement the organization's mission and goals. Incumbent will ensure productivity is maintained at the established level for the program for which he/she is responsible.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 USC 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements of employment, the following criteria must be met. NOTE: To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics associated with current Medical Instrument Technician practice appropriate to the identified specialty area (Vascular).

Experience: Experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-07) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. This would be experience which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform noninvasive vascular ultrasound procedures as a senior technician.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Knowledge of cross-sectional and longitudinal vascular anatomy in normal and abnormal vessels, anatomical planes and tissue structures, physiologic effects of disease entities that impact the vascular system, signs and symptoms of acute and chronic vascular disease, and the characteristic appearance of aneurysms, pseudoaneurysms, thromboses, stenoses, occlusions, AV fistulae, and morphology of atherosclerotic plaque formulation.

2. Ability to provide Doppler information of peripheral vessels; demonstrate characteristic differences related to the organs they supply; accurately quantify carotid artery stenoses; and identify and correlate specific waveform analysis, plethysmographic tracings, velocity changes, and pressure gradients characteristic of normal, obstructed, or occluded vessels or grafts.

3. Ability to perform intracranial (transcranial) vascular examinations.

4. Ability to operate the instruments to extract the highest quality image utilizing the appropriate transducer frequency, Doppler angle, focal zones, gain, depth, color map, wall filter, and sample volume.5. Ability to provide objective data to document progression or regression of disease. (c) Certification.

Preferred Experience: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements: Work is primarily performed in patient care areas. Heavy lifting, moderate carrying, pushing, reaching above shoulders, repeated bending, use of hand-eye coordination, fingers coordination, both hands required, repeated walking, standing, ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time. Heavy lifting and carrying of 45 or more pounds.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
