The Underground Cableman position will be responsible for construction, maintenance and repair of electrical underground power distribution systems for our Underground Utilities Department in Maryland and Delaware. Cableman must safely install, troubleshoot, repair and remove overhead/underground distribution power lines within the scope of his/her training. . The Lineman must safely operate various equipment including but not limited to, bucket trucks, digger derrick, pickup trucks, excavation and track equipment. . Must know the tooling for line work and how to use, adjust and calibrate them . Must be able to safely spot utilities in the bore path; dig pit and trenches; perform site clean up Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: . Demonstrate an aptitude to learn the duties required in the Lineman position . Know proper handling, storage and transporting of conduits, wire, pipe and materials . Know proper methods of safely splicing conduits and stubbing up pipe and wire into enclosures . Know Lockout Tag-out and tagging procedures; know how to read and understand a print for the system(s) they are working on; know electric Safety and how electricity works . Know and understand the operation of support equipment; digging equipment, vac-units, reel trailers; know the tooling for line work and how to use, adjust and calibrate them . Know Transformer safety and the parts of a Transformer; understand the different types of electrical equipment used on a system. (Hand hole, pedestal, pull through cabinet, Switch Gear) . Know proper cable pulling procedures; understand and demonstrate the proper methods for determining if a line is energized or not; Know the proper materials used for making terminations and proper crimping standards; know and demonstrate the proper methods and standards for making Secondary Terminations, building and elbow, secondary cables, and splice on a primary cable Qualifications: . Able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis . Drive support vehicles (Class A CDL preferred) . Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of de-energized conductors . Demonstrate proficiency for all methods of cable pulling/installation and the ability to properly splice/terminate underground feeders with heat shrink splices, primary and secondary conductor terminations and similar terminations other underground facilities such as Vaults, riser poles and various switch-gear . Must be able to safely troubleshoot, locate, test to be de-energized and ground and repair underground cables and re-energize equipment after repairs have been made . Must have knowledge of related construction specifications and applicable OSHA regulations (trenching, excavating, confined spaces) . Repair or replace pad mounted equipment (switch cabinets, single/three phase pad mounted transformers, etc.) . Knowledge of distribution voltages on a circuit and able to read blue prints . Capable of performing basic manhole and bucket rescue/escape (training will be provided) . Demonstrate proficiency with appropriate operating, tools, equipment (eg Dynatel fault finder, Von Thumper & Von First Response Unit, etc.), and vehicles (eg backhoe, digger derrick, etc.) Minimum Requirements: . Able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License permit within 150 days of employment. . Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required. . Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required. . Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs. . Able to properly inspect rubber gloves and PPE. . Willing to work over-time when requested.
