VDOT's Culpeper District is seeking a detailed oriented applicant to fill Inspection position within Culpeper County. Selected candidates will independently coordinate, schedule and inspect all phases of routine/complex highway construction and maintenance projects. Positions will ensure construction activities are performed in accordance to contracts, plans and applicable documents to include environmental, Erosion & Settlement Controls, safety, traffic controls, EEO/DBE guidelines and regulations/permits; oversee and perform materials testing to ensure project is constructed to the designed quality standards; and ensure monthly pay items are processed for the contractor. Ensures work zones are properly established/maintained and ensure contractor performance is in compliance with safety practices; monitor project schedule and review/maintain project budgets; and manage project public relations, respond to public concerns, and communicate with VDOT support staff and contractors. These positions are designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report. Minimum Qualifications Experience with construction methods, materials, equipment, standards, specifications, and terminology; with applying state and federal safety, environmental, and EEO/DB guidelines and regulations related to transportation construction Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry and ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments to construction plans Ability to read, interpret/analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, construction contracts and other project management documents; to record/maintain detailed project documentation and prepare reports, forms and correspondence Ability to work independently and oversee and provide technical guidance and training to other inspectors Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with VDOT, contractor personnel and the general public Able to perform physically demanding work in field conditions such as using test equipment, lifting, climbing, stooping, working at heights, in confined spaces and making visual observations Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment Skill in the use of computers and software applications Possess certifications noted below or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire (or earliest date/classes are offered) and maintain thereafter. Certifications include: soils, aggregate, asphalt, concrete, nuclear safety and transportation, guardrail installation, pavement markings, First Aid, CPR, flagging, work zone safety, storm water inspection, erosion and sediment control and OSHA safety training courses Valid driver's license required at time of hire . Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License ( CDL ) and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. Safety shoes and other safety gear are required in the performance of duties. Preferred Qualifications Experience in a broad range of road and bridge construction inspection activities with a DOT or a DOT consultant inspection firm. Proficiency in MS Office and Site Manager or other project management software. Experience overseeing the work of others. Special Requirements All positions within Culpeper District are essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. References, work history, and DMV records will be verified. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense. Fingerprint-based criminal history records check required. Selected candidate may be required to operate or work in the vicinity of devices containing radioactive materials and emitting low levels of ionizing radiation. Positions require unrestricted mobility, including, at times, unrestricted mobility in irregular terrain; working at heights and in confined spaces, making visual observations; the ability to stand for long periods of time; the ability to work in a variety of environments affected by, but not limited to, such elements as dust, vapors, heat, and moisture; and the ability to lift 50 lbs.
