Summary

The primary duties of the incumbent are that of a work leader, performing work which requires physical abilities and effort that involves general skills and knowledge regarding maintenance functions pertaining to Carpentry, Plumbing, Electricity, Painting, and HVAC. The principal tasks involve leading workers in the safe and correct repair, renovation, and maintenance to all station furniture, furnishings, and structures.

Responsibilities

Receives instructions and project deadlines from the Zone Maintenance supervisor. The incumbent updates and advises other workers; and responds to questions regarding the overall work operations, assigned projects, and problems. The incumbent ensures work progress reports are given to the supervisor for all projects, on a regular and recurring basis.

Ensures required plans, instructions, materials, tools, and other supplies are obtained and available. Interprets building drawings, blueprints, schematics, manufacturer specifications, and other instructions to determine layout and sequences of work to be completed. Obtains needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that may come up during work. Sets up, operates, and provides guidance on a wide variety of machines and tools utilized in the trades of Carpentry, Plumbing, Electricity, Painting, and HVAC to complete tasks. Assures tasks are completed in accordance with supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines by working along with others and setting the pace, checking work in progress, and validating completed projects. The incumbent reports the status and progress of the work, potential delays and causes to the supervisor.

Maintains current knowledge, and answers questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions and associated directives pertaining to assigned tasks.

Participates in work and ensures work crews are actively engaged on assignments and are productive. Ensures safety and housekeeping rules are followed. Assembles, installs, and maintains items and structures, at the apprentice level, in the trades of Carpentry, Plumbing, Electricity, Painting, and HVAC while demonstrating proper work methods.

Performs other directly related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:45am - 3:30pm. Must have the flexibility to work outside the normal tour of duty which may include weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements. Work is performed at various job sites throughout the facility. The incumbent is required to walk and stand for extended periods of time while operating tools and equipment. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling and stooping. Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials. The employee may regularly lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds, and occasionally in excess of 100 pounds.

Working Conditions. Work is performed in all areas of the hospital, indoors and outdoors, where the incumbent is exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, etc. Subject to moderate or high noise levels from operating tools, equipment, and machinery, dust, fumes, electricity, moving machinery, chemicals, and other hazardous material associated with maintenance trades. The incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions, and may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. The incumbent uses protective clothing and devices in accordance with directives and policies.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards .

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
