Summary

This position is located at the National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC). The NMAAHC is a national museum for the study and exhibition of African American history and culture. It acquires, maintains and preserves objects which document social, cultural, political, military, technological and scientific developments in the U.S. related to the African American experience.

Responsibilities

The position reports to the Associate Director of Project Management and Planning in the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) and is responsible for providing budget, financial, and administrative support to include managing procurement, property, travel, and other administrative functions. Duties include:
  • ensuring that the Associate Director maintains regular interaction with direct reports and key leaders throughout the Smithsonian;
  • serving as the principal assistant and advisor providing advice in the review, evaluation and coordination of all activities and assignments requiring the attention of the Associate Director;
  • advising on financial and budgetary procedures, including formulating, presenting, executing, and analyzing organizational budgets supporting the projects and functions of the Associate Director and ensuring they are aligned with NMAAHC's goals;
  • working with supervisor on the development and coordination of new, special, pan-institutional and on-going projects and with outside organizations;
  • advising the supervisor on domestic and/or foreign travel arrangements and the arrangements of site meetings for individuals and large groups;
  • preparing materials such as correspondence, reports and briefing slides using a variety of office software.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as managing operational logistics; responding to inquiries in writing and orally; maintaining calendar of meetings/events; managing and tracking a variety of funds; preparing procurement packages for supplies, services and/or equipment, etc.; coordinating and managing travel arrangements and preparing travel vouchers; establishing suspense system to log and track correspondence, reports, meetings, etc. and reviewing correspondence to ensure grammatical correctness.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
