Responsibilities

• Plan, develop, direct and execute pharmacoepidemiological and pharmacovigilance science projects and adverse drug events surveillance aimed at identifying trends of known adverse events.
• Lead research in developing, executing and analyzing scientific studies.
• Evaluate new adverse events, validate these adverse events and conducts studies to determine the association between suspected adverse drug events and drugs.
• Work focuses on understanding and preventing or minimizing patient risk while increasing the beneficial effect of medications.
• Employ extensive knowledge in pharmacovigilance, pharmacoepidemiology methods and understand major biases inherent to pharmacoepidemiology studies and how to minimize such biases.

• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
• This position requires occasional travel outside the commuting area approximately 5% of the time.

Qualifications for EPIDEMIOLOGIST (PHARMACOVIGILANCE) GS-0601-13:

Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes, providing consultations to various personnel in regard to epidemiology surveillance; advising leadership on reportable medical events such as disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, and prevention; assisting in the execution of pharmacoepidemiology and/or pharmacovigilance science research projects; and analyzing large datasets while conducting various comparative studies.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
