Summary

The Salem VAMC is looking for a Registered Nurse (RN) for the Outpatient Specialty Clinics. The RN is directly responsible to the manager in the assigned area; the RN is responsible and accountable for the provision of direct patient care and for the delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse veteran patient population. The RN must posses the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting.

Responsibilities

Duties are but not limited to:
  • The RN will be responsible for providing nursing care to the veteran within the general surgery, vascular and plastic surgery clinic.
  • The RN is responsible for triaging and maintaining the flow of the clinic, assisting with minimally invasive procedures, and assisting with the application and removal of splints and/or casts.
  • Directly reports to the Nurse Manager
  • Responsible for review, investigate (consult with the provider) and reply to secure messages as well as phone messages
  • The candidate will provide pre-op and post-op education as appropriate in partnership with the pre-admission clinic. In addition, assist with surgery scheduling, rescheduling, and related duties.
  • Initiates perform and complete assigned duties in providing care to veterans patient populations
  • Demonstration of the high level of personal and professional accountability and the ability to be self-directed
  • Excellent assessment skills and effective organizational skills
  • Effectively applies all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting
  • Ability to problem-solve, apply critical thinking skills, and resolve conflict
  • Manages computerized documentation, medication administration, and leadership responsibilities
  • Ability to work independently and within a team structure, Must have excellent interpersonal skills to communicate and coordinate patient care with the interdisciplinary team and follow through on Veterans request
  • Communicates and interacts appropriately and courteously with all internal and external customers
  • Ability to use EMR / CPRS and use of MS office tools not limited to Outlook.
  • The candidate will be crossed trained to provide nursing coverage to other surgery-medicine specialty clinics as and when needed
  • Provides care appropriate to the age-related needs of patients served in the assigned area of practice
  • Maintains confidentiality of electronic, written, and/or verbal patient/employee information
  • Demonstrates working practices that include adherence to Infection Control standards and the safe use and operation of equipment
  • Conforms to Medical Center and Service/Service Line policies, procedures, and protocols to avoid injury and/or illness to self and others
  • Nurse is responsible for providing coverage to the nurse coordinator/navigator.
  • Must maintain active BLS certification as per VHA guidance
  • Nurse will represent the clinic/s at the Reusable Medical Equipment committee
  • As per VHA guidelines, this is position requires walking, lifting, bending, and squatting needed to perform patient care or assist with the procedure. In addition, an applicant must be able to participate independently in the procedures requiring the use of reusable medical equipment, patient lift, wheelchair or stretcher, would care, minimally invasive procedures, and other new procedures introduced to the area.
  • Performs additional related duties as a functional statement and within the nursing and surgery/medicine department as required as per VHA guidelines.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/18/2021.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
