Office of the Treasurer
This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program

Arlington County is an innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. As an elected official, the Arlington County Treasurer is accountable to the citizens of Arlington County. We are seeking a bright, highly motivated individual for an exciting one-year Internship in a variety of positions across the County. This position offers a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide a new college graduate and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.


Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Program Participation

2020 and 2021 college graduates with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who have no significant professional work experience in an area related to the internship are welcome to apply. Applications will be considered from candidates who have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2020 OR 2021 prior to the start date of the Internship or who are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship.

Position Available
Treasurer's Office - Data Support Intern

The Office of the Treasurer is offering a Data Support internship to work under the Deputy for Technology. The Data Support Intern will fulfill the day-to-day reporting requirements of the Treasurer and the Chief Deputy and also interact and collaborate with other agencies. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with minimal supervision to extract, mine, and analyze data which summarizes real estate tax, personal property tax, and other transactions.

Under the guidance of a senior staff member, this Intern will assist with the following:

  • Tracking accounts across different years to produce reports, including performing trend analysis of accounts billed vs accounts paid over time;
  • Analyzing current delinquent account balances and those already in collections against historical data to create reports which indicate possible trends;
  • Summarizing fiscal year assessments to make predictions based upon created models;
  • Reporting on discrepancies between the collections system and the parking ticket system to reconcile differences and/or identify underlying issues; and
  • Monitoring real estate exemption and deferral reports to alert management as soon as taxes come due (i.e. upon sale, or upon death of property owner).

Selection Criteria
  • Earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2020 or 2021 prior to the start date of the Internship or currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship;
  • Interns are not expected to have professional work experience related to the internship; and
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above. Applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts.
Degree Requirements Computer Science, Data Analytics, Business Administration with an IT focus, or Mathematics.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with demonstrated use and/or academic coursework in the following:
  • Data Analytics;
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, specifically MS Access and MS Excel;
  • Experience programming in Python, R, or an equivalent scripting language; and/or
  • Summarizing information in Tableau.
