Position Information
The Department of Parks and Recreatio n (DPR) is seeking an enthusiastic Lead Gymnastics Instructor to provide coaching and administrative tasks related to the recreational gymnastics programs offered through Arlington. The Instructors will also work alongside the Gymnastics Program Manager to plan and oversee the recreational gymnastics program, including preschool classes at Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center.

The Arlington County Gymnastics program has something for everyone. The program supports the competitive girls' team, the Arlington Aerials, a competitive boys' team, the Arlington Tigers, and a robust recreational class program. Our teams compete in 10 to 15 meets each season, and the class program offers over 250 classes yearly. The program is housed in the Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center, a 30,000-sf. facility that includes over 20,000 sf. of gymnastics equipment.

Specific Duties:

  • Coaching various levels of recreational gymnastics classes;
  • Hiring, training, scheduling, and managing part-time recreational staff; including evaluating and writing performance appraisals, monitoring and updating start and end of shift duties for recreational staff;
  • Assisting part-time recreational staff on tasks like securing subs, recording time, and keeping up to date on county and USA Gymnastics required trainings;
  • Placing equipment orders based on recreational class needs, making sure class rosters are kept up to date, u pdating class curriculum, and p reparing monthly lesson plans for preschool classes;
  • Coordinating with the Gymnastics Program Manager on rotation needs for recreational classes, and developing and implementing recreational curriculum updates;
  • Hosting quarterly trainings for all recreational staff covering a variety of topics, including spotting technique, drills, and progressions;
  • Working with the inclusion coordinator to ensure accommodation requests are met;
  • Submitting quarterly class listings for the Enjoy Arlington catalog and ensuring class descriptions are up to date;
  • Providing customer service to recreational parents and working closely with the registration office on assisting families with sign up needs; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience communicating with large and diverse groups, staying organized, managing priorities, being flexible, and motivating others. Exercising mature judgment and sound decision-making, with basic computer, Google Docs, and digital information management skills are essential.

Selection Criteria
Minimum:

  • High school diploma/GED;
  • 1200 hours of technical experience in Gymnastics (may come from a variety of sources, such as work experiences, volunteer experiences or formal athletic participation); and
  • Must have at least 50 hours as an instructor.
Substitution: Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a Bachelor's Degree in a related field and experience in one or more of the following:

  • Recreational coordinator;
  • USA Gymnastics Member club setting; and
  • Lift equipment and spotting children.

Special Requirements
A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment, which may include the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Must obtain and/or maintain all required certifications including USA Gymnastics, CPR/AED, and Safe Sport.
