Position Information

The Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) is looking for an experienced investigator to provide support to the ACPD Human Resources and Recruitment Team by assisting in the processing of background information submitted by prospective sworn and non-uniform Police Department applicants.

This Background Investigator is primarily responsible for the background investigation portion of the recruitment process and provides support in conducting administrative internal departmental investigations. The Investigator will be responsible for the management and administration of their own caseload and will provide supplementary assistance and support to the department's Human Resources Management Section.

Specific duties include:

  • Reviewing employment applications to gain familiarity with applicants, extract contact information, and identify information which additional research and follow up may be necessary;
  • Contacting applicants to advise them of the documents required for their background investigation;
  • Verifying employment history, educational history, and military service which may include contacting previous employers and schools;
  • Conducting criminal record checks and obtaining credit history reports;
  • Interviewing employers, supervisors, co-workers, relatives, and other contacts to gather information concerning the potential employment of applicants;
  • Coordinating medical and psychological exams;
  • Writing narrative employment investigative reports for each applicant;
  • Advising the ACPD Human Resources and Recruitment Team staff of information or issues of concern uncovered during the background investigations and providing feedback regarding those issues when requested;
  • Developing background summary reports, maintaining accurate and confidential records of applicants, the background investigations conducted, and conclusions of background investigations; and
  • Assisting in scheduling assignments relating to the initial testing and screening of applicants.

Selection Criteria
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, business administration or related field; and
  • One year of experience performing background investigations which includes verifying accuracy of documents and questionnaires, and contacting references.
Substitution: Additional related qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to applicants with the following experience:
  • Working as a sworn law enforcement officer in an investigative role;
  • Knowledge of Police investigative principles and interview techniques;
  • Communicating with outside agencies such as employers and education institutions for the purposes of obtaining information, some which may be confidential, and tracking that information; and
  • Researching, analyzing, tracking, and monitoring information and statistics, and preparing reports to help inform the decision making of leadership.

Special Requirements
Applicant selected will be required to undergo a thorough pre-employment character/background investigation which may include a polygraph examination and a drug test.

If selected, the employee must take the state mandated Virginia Criminal Information Network certification class and pass a written examination within six months of hire.
