This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program


Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking bright, highly motivated individuals for an exciting one-year Internship in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide new college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Internship

Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Program Participation

2020 OR 2021 College graduates with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who have no professional work experience in an area related to the internship are welcome to apply. Applications will be considered from candidates who have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2020 or 2021 prior to the start date of the Internship or who are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship.

Position Available

Adult Guardian Program Intern

Arlington County's Aging and Disability Services' Community Supports and Coordination Services Bureau (CSCB) is hiring an Intern to assist the DHS Guardianship Program under Adult Services with volunteer guardianship recruitment, training, and coordination. The Intern will be responsible for managing and tracking guardianship referrals across the Department and work collaboratively with the Aging & Disability Services' Guardianship team to monitor guardians who have been appointed by Arlington County's Circuit Court. Monitoring guardians is considered an evidenced based practice to ensure quality of care and support to adults under guardianship. The Guardianship program is open to all DHS clients who need a volunteer guardian and the program is responsible for recruiting, training, staffing, supporting, matching and monitoring guardians. The program works collaboratively with Arlington County's Circuit Court and Adult Services to review and approve annual guardianship reports filed by guardians.

The Intern will work under the guidance of staff to assist with the following:
  • Conducting targeted training and education to recruit and build capacity of volunteer guardians;
  • Coordinating DHS referrals for guardianship program and facilitate guardianship assignments;
  • Following up on delinquent guardianship reports to assess and document in Peer Place as state Electronic Health Record System;
  • Managing, organizing, and tracking trainings for new and existing guardians;
  • Performing monitoring visits both remotely and in person to interview guardians and incapacitated person to assess risks and quality of care through administration of a newly implemented guardianship monitoring assessment tool; and
  • Tracking performance metrics for guardianship program, and evaluating and presenting outcomes.

Selection Criteria
Minimums:
  • Must have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2020 or 2021 prior to the start date of the Internship or are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship.
  • Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship.
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above. Applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts.
Degree Requirements : Social Work, Psychology, Public Policy, Public Administration, or directly related field.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Master's degree in directly related field;
  • MS Excel skills at an intermediate level;
  • Serving individuals with physical, mental, developmental, or intellectual disabilities; and/or
  • Working with aging population on related issues, programs, and services.
Substitution: There is no substitution for the degree requirement.

Special Requirements
The selected candidate must be available to start immediately and have the ability to work remotely as needed.

Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent on a favorable review of the applicant's driving record and criminal history.
