Overview

AARP Services, Inc., founded in 1999, is a wholly-owned taxable subsidiary of AARP. AARP Services manages the provider relationships for and performs quality control oversight of the wide range of products and services that carry the AARP name and are made available by independent providers as benefits to AARP's millions of members. The provider offers currently span health products, financial products, travel and leisure products, and life event services. Specific products include Medicare supplemental insurance; credit cards, auto and home, mobile home and motorcycle insurance, life insurance and annuities; member discounts on rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and lodging; special offers on technology and gifts; pharmacy services and legal services. AARP Services also engages in new product development activities for AARP and provides certain consulting services to outside companies.

The Product Development Manager will be a member of the AARP Services, Inc. ( ASI) team and work in collaboration with AARP. ASI oversees and monitors product and service providers to ensure that products with the AARP-brand deliver value to AARP members. Working within the Emerging Businesses Product Development & Management Team, this individual will be responsible for new product development ranging from bringing concepts to market to refining existing products within the ASI Emerging Businesses Team, ASI LOBs (Lines of Businesses) Team, and various AARP teams.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participates in the development of physical and digital products, intake pipeline strategies, and implementation plans including evaluating new business models, developing prototypes, guiding test plans, and measuring performance against plan. Physical and digital product development may include new whitespace areas, developing potential concepts, or refining an existing product for an ASI line of business.
  • Assesses opportunities for new products, evaluates and determines best concepts, and leads project management strategy and product development through launch.
  • Identifies and evaluates new consumer need states, business opportunities, product and service solutions that further the company's strategic growth objectives.
  • Participates in inter-company initiatives between AARP & ASI, enhancing collaboration between both entities and ensuring the proper deployment of assets.
  • Forges and maintains relationships with key strategic players in the ASI ecosystem.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in product design with 3+ years of physical and digital product design experience working in a corporate environment, or a master's degree in business administration or human- centered design with 2+ years of physical and digital product design experience in a corporate environment.
  • Experience with consumer physical and digital products, as well as experience in brand management.
  • Experience managing product development, from concept to execution and applying human-centered design methods.
  • Project Management - ability to scope out length and difficulty of projects and tasks; set objectives and goals; develop schedules and task assignments; anticipate pitfalls and roadblocks, and pivot as needed; perform tasks when needed and deliver results within project scope and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, including building strategic and solid partnerships, collaborate across the enterprise in an extremely complex organization, and gain internal respect and build consensus from superiors, peers, and subordinates.
  • Limited travel may be required -- 10%

Desired Skills:
  • Corporate experience working with startups or extensive participation in startup pitch competitions; Product research and testing; Physical prototyping and/or consumer packaging
  • Understanding of brand management, marketing and sales in product development; Understanding of UX/UI developing apps and websites
