Summary

The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Leader performs duties involved with installation, maintenance, and repair of systems. The selectee will perform a variety of air conditioning and refrigeration functions including heating, cooling, cleaning, filtering, and circulating to condition the air.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a working leader responsible for the following functions/duties: Passing on to other workers the instructions received from the supervisor and getting work started by distributing the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the work group; working along with other workers and setting the pace; demonstrating proper work methods; ensuring that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available and that needed materials are obtained; obtaining necessary information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work shift; maintaining current knowledge on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders to be able to answer questions of other workers); seeing to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy; checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been followed; urging or advising other workers to follow supervisor's instructions and to meet deadlines; reporting to supervisors on status and progress of work and causes of work delays; and answering supervisors' questions on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning the need for additional on-the-job training for individual employees).
  • Responsible for 1) the transition from pneumatic to direct digital controls; 2) greater diversity and complexity of interoperable vendor products; 3) new navigation and troubleshooting requirements for electronically controlled systems; and 4) frequent system construction modification requirements throughout the capitol complex to accommodate tenant requests and modernization.
  • Maintains and repairs refrigeration and air conditioning systems including steam and chilled water lines and regulating valves. Installs or replaces pipes and ducts where conditioned areas are considerable distance from compressors. Troubleshoots the system, identifies defective components, determines corrective actions, and makes repairs to systems including reducing valves, steam traps, overload elements, condensers, chilled water and steam heater coils, evaporators, and chilled water pumps. Removes and replaces chilled water lines.

LOCATION: Architect of the Capitol, U.S. Capitol Building, Asst. Supt. CB & CVC Ops & Main Division, Maintenance Branch, Maintenance Section, Day, Evening or Night Unit.

Qualifications

You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT element in order to be referred for consideration:
  • Ability to perform the work of an air conditioning equipment mechanic leader without more than normal supervision. This includes the ability to lead employees performing air conditioning equipment mechanic work, specifically for refrigeration and air conditioning systems including steam and chilled water lines and regulating valves. This must be journey-level experience as an air conditioning equipment mechanic performing duties such as repairing and completing overhaul of refrigeration and air conditioning systems including steam and chilled water lines and regulating valves; installing or replacing pipes and ducts; troubleshooting the system; identifying defective components; determining corrective actions; and making repairs to systems. Examples of the systems include reducing valves, steam traps, overload elements, condensers, chilled water and steam heater coils, evaporators, and chilled water pumps.
