The beautiful tree-lined City of New Carrollton is a residential community located in suburban Prince George's County, approximately eight miles from Washington, DC New Carrollton has a diverse population of over 12,500 residents.The City of New Carrollton is looking for a full-time Equipment Operator to join our Public Works Department. This position is under the direct supervision of the Infrastructure Maintenance Supervisor. The ideal candidate must be a team player with a "can-do" attitude who works well with others. The Equipment Operator must have the ability to lead a team, as this position may oversee the completion of various projects in the absence of the Infrastructure Maintenance Supervisor.Work assignments for this position are primarily outdoors within the city limits. The employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, debris, chemicals, and foul odors. This individual may be called in for various off-hour emergencies and weather-related activities. A valid Class B Commercial Driver's and one (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment such as a dump truck, loader and/or a backhoe is required. Must have a clean driving record for a minimum of (12) consecutive months. Hourly rate starts at $19.75; however, pay commensurate with experience. Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds on a regular basis.TYPICAL TASKSOperates City vehicles, loader, tractor, street striper, snow removal equipment and similar equipment.Assists in maintaining City road surfaces and sidewalks using heavy equipment and hand tools. Rids visual obstructions from roads and intersections. Applies layers of gravel or asphalt mix to road surfaces; repairs and patches deteriorated surfaces. Deconstructs cracked sidewalks and curbs; replaces them with concrete. Cleans out drains and replaces pipes from sub pump; assists in the installation and removal of pipes. Replaces worn and broken street signs with new signs. Repaints crosswalks and divided lane lines and bridge indicators. Removes tree stumps throughout the City. Participates in snow removal activities. Performs related work as assignedKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTSKnowledge of necessary safety measures to use when working with trash packers and automotive equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with city officials, employees, property owners, residents and the general public; ability to performs strenuous tasks for extended periods of time in various types of weather.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSHigh school diploma or GED equivalent required. A minimum of two years of experience as an equipment operator or closely related experience preferred. Any satisfactory combination of experience, education, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be deemed acceptable.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSMust be able to perform medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.The City of New Carrollton is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
