Heavy Equipment Operator II
Job Description Benefits Supplemental Questions Performs intermediate semiskilled and skilled work involving the operation of landfill and heavy equipment; operates and maintains Stafford's mobile recycling collection systems; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Superintendent of Solid Waste Management. Full position salary range is $42,660.80 - $72,529.60. Examples of Duties: Operating heavy equipment in the operation and maintenance of the landfill; operating and maintaining the mobile recycling collection system; servicing and maintaining equipment. Opens and closes landfill working areas; Transports mobile recycling collection systems; Operates a front-end loader tractor, pan, roller, motor grader, compactor, dozer, tract loader and related equipment in the operation and maintenance of a landfill; Places and compacts refuse and covers with earth; Maintains mobile recycling collection systems; Clears land for expansion of landfill, including cutting of trees for disposal and firewood; Opens and maintains access roads; Assists with community cleanup programs; Services and makes minor repairs to equipment; Maintains equipment log, including daily walk around inspection and safety equipment check; Assists with snow removal and spreading sand; Operates a variety of small power equipment; Assists mechanic with major repairs to heavy equipment as needed; and Performs related tasks as required. Typical Qualifications: General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy construction equipment; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; general knowledge and ability to identify and handle infectious and hazardous waste properly; skill and care in the operation of several types of construction equipment; ability to operate vehicles and equipment fitted with automatic transmission; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Supplemental Information: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in the operation of heavy equipment, some experience in mechanical equipment repair.
