The Antitrust Division seeks talented and motivated Paralegal Specialists to join litigation and investigation teams. In particular, in addition to a record number of ongoing investigations involving diverse industries, the Division is litigating United States v. Google , one of the most significant and high-profile antitrust litigations in recent years; and United States v. American Airlines & JetBlue , which challenges an extensive, unprecedented alliance between American and JetBlue.

Duties and responsibilities will include:
  • Performing factual research using evidentiary files, library reference materials, corporate records, private and governmental studies, computer databases, internet resources, and other pertinent sources to supply needed factual information for inclusion in memoranda, briefs, and similar documents.
  • Assisting attorneys in preparing for and conducting interviews with investigative sources and prospective witnesses; taking accurate notes during witness interviews and promptly preparing reliable, concise memoranda from those notes.
  • Assisting attorneys in preparation for depositions, including working with court reporting agencies, preparing exhibits, and attending depositions.
  • Performing screening and substantive analysis of significant electronic productions and hard copy materials prior to review by attorneys; coding electronic documents and categorizing hard copy documents in accordance with case priorities.
  • Assisting technical support staff with the preparation and organization of electronic document review databases; working with technical support staff to resolve issues with incoming productions.
  • Organizing and maintaining tracking logs for all incoming and outgoing case-related material.
  • Preparing and organizing charts, graphs, and other materials to be used for internal memoranda and presentations as well as exhibits in court.
  • Preparing tables of content, indexes, and tables of authorities for legal briefs, memoranda, and other such documents; reviewing and researching citations, footnotes, textual references, and other entries for accuracy.

To qualify for the position of Paralegal Specialist, applicants must be current employees with the Department of Justice at the GS-7 or GS-9 and have experience supporting civil or criminal investigations, litigation, or trials. In particular, experience in the following skills is preferred: (1) drafting and editing standard legal documents, reports, and correspondence; (2) researching public records; (3) using CaseMap, LexisNexis, Relativity, Westlaw, and other research tools; (4) applying knowledge of basic legal principles and concepts; and (5) tracking and maintaining detailed records.


This job does not have an education qualification requirement.

Additional information

Paralegal Specialists selected for this detail will maintain their current grade and salaries. This position has no promotion potential.

The Antitrust Division is in maximum telework due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, detailees will not be expected to relocate and are encouraged to apply regardless of their home duty station. Travel may be required, however, whether to Antitrust Division offices in Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York, or San Francisco as required due to the ongoing investigation or litigation needs; the location of a deposition; or the location of a trial.
