Director of Technology

The Director of Technology role provides a considerable opportunity for ingenuity in driving enterprise technology transformations. We are looking for an independent thinker who makes convincing, evidence-based decisions. The ideal candidate will devise clear roadmaps to deliver results across a broad portfolio of initiatives and is comfortable thinking strategically and diving deep; a vanguard leader who can identify opportunities and leverage the team to translate them into live solutions.

As a Director of Technology at Capital One, you will ensure governance, drive strategy, and execute on high priority initiatives. As the leader of a technology portfolio, you'll ensure your portfolio's delivery success by leveraging the appropriate Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban/SAFe/LESS) to enable predictable, quality delivery while maintaining a focus on the continuous improvement of the portfolio. You will lead the team to optimize productivity by removing impediments that may obstruct the pursuit of the portfolio's goals and by preserving flexibility and ability to rapidly respond to change.


Strategy Development:
  • Drawing on internal and external research, partner with leadership to define and drive alignment on annual updates to the technology strategy as well as the supporting operations and labor strategies
  • Translate strategies into actionable programs and execute them flawlessly within the line of business and engineering organization by means of exceptional organization and influencing skills
  • Demonstrate a high degree of forward-lean, drive insights into continuous improvement opportunities and incubate new ideas

  • Ensure that best practices are standardized across the organization for Agile, Product, and Software Development LifeCycle.
  • Be ready to lead a complex program that is focused on building software as part of delivering great customer experience.
  • Facilitates the creation of strategic initiative business cases partnering with intent owners and senior leadership, responsible for representing intent with portfolio partners in assessment and prioritization conversations Actively partners with Product, Design and Technology stakeholders to align solutions with program objectives within an Agile delivery culture Applies complex facilitation and dependency management techniques to drive cross-program and departmental planning, collaboration, and coordination
  • Advances Business, Technology and Operations leadership's understanding of their respective roles within Agile software delivery and influence organizational agility
  • Optimizes strategic flow of delivery across business and technology by identifying opportunities for continuous improvement with measurable outcomes
  • Supports issue resolution and risk mitigation, escalating to advisory and steering committee groups, as needed
  • Helps establish governance structure where decision-making is weighted toward empowered teams
  • Ensures that portfolio is well managed in delivery controls and compliance

Advocate for and demonstrate strong leadership:
  • Set the example in attracting the talent of the future by participating in campus and professional recruiting activities and creating the structure for department participation in recruiting
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead large scale change initiatives from a programmatic as well as a people perspective
  • Focus on leadership and talent development to build a high performing team

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least 7 years of experience delivering technology programs using Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, or SAFe)
  • At least 5 years of people management experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree
  • CSM, PMP, Lean, Agile, or Six Sigma certification
