Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a senior creative technologist to drive some of The Post's most ambitious journalistic projects using cutting-edge technologies, including spatial computing and augmented reality.

This person will join The Post's news R&D team, Lede Lab , working closely and collaboratively with UX designers, front-end developers and journalists across the newsroom to explore emerging technologies and rapidly prototype new applications and storytelling approaches. Recent examples include experimenting with Lidar-captured 3-D modeling in a story about the future of public transit, prototyping an augmented reality gallery of The Post's historical inauguration covers from 1881 to 2021 and experimenting with WebXR to find a solution accessible to any reader with a mobile device, and using 5G and LTE support to remotely produce a video- and drone-driven story of small businesses along the West Coast.

This role will provide opportunities to set technical strategy for all projects as the team's lead engineer, mentor fellow developers and contribute creative journalistic ideas.

Ideal candidates will have strong front-end engineering experience, a user-first approach to building and scaling products, curiosity and an interest in emerging technologies, and experience or a strong interest in news/media. Familiarity with JavaScript, the React framework, Node.js or other common JS frameworks and experience on AWS is required.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, it will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and portfolio of front-end work to our jobs portal by Aug 23. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Director of Strategic Initiatives Elite Truong, Managing Editors Tracy Grant and Krissah Thompson.
