An Overview
The City of Alexandria’s Finance Department is looking for a friendly, attentive, detail-oriented Account Clerk III to join our team. As a member the Treasury Division, the Account Clerk III is a public-facing role on the first floor of City Hall. This position provides direct customer service to Alexandria residents, visitors, and business owners. Typical work in this role includes receiving cash and check payments directly from customers; generating receipts and deposit slips; reconciling cash and receivables; and reviewing financial transactions, account codes, and amounts. The Account Clerk III performs work under the general supervision of the Deputy Treasurer.

  • Ability to reconcile financial statements;
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail with minimal room for error;

  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Intermediate to advanced skill in Microsoft Office Suite (including significant use of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint); and
  • Strong skill at communicating both orally and in writing.
The Opportunity - Examples of Work
The Account Clerk III must possess the ability to professionally represent and effectively communicate with a diverse public in person, by telephone, and in writing. Additional duties of this role include:
  • Preparing receipts for cash and checks received, balancing cash, and preparing deposit slips;
  • Reviewing and approving financial transactions, account codes, and amounts for entry into the City's accounting system;
  • Computing, maintaining, and balancing real estate tax adjustment records;
  • Resolving City residents' problems regarding parking citations, residential parking permits, and City tax payments;
  • Providing information and guidance to the public in-person and by telephone regarding tax assessments, fees, rents, fines, and a variety of related payments;
  • Operating an automated cash register program to collect City monies, tax payments and other miscellaneous payments;
  • Preparing monthly revenue reports; and
  • Performing related work as required.
About the Department
The City of Alexandria's Finance Department is a fast-paced, diverse, and customer service focused operation that is responsible for: the assessment, collection, and enforcement of all City taxes, the management of cash flow and investments, accounting for and reporting the City’s financial position, processing payroll, executing a fair and competitive procurement environment, assessing all real and personal property in the City, managing the City’s risk and safety programs, and managing the City’s pension plans. The Finance Department has seven divisions and in fiscal year 2020 is operating with a total budget of $13.9 million and 108.25 FTE positions.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma or GED, and three years' experience in bookkeeping and related clerical work equivalent to the level of Account Clerk II, including the preparation of financial reports, and completion of high school level courses in bookkeeping, business arithmetic and English; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Successful completion of college finance or business classes; experience in direct customer service; local government experience; experience with Virginia local taxes; experience with payment processing and/or accounts receivable software systems.
