The Senior Clinical Ethics Consultant (SCEC) works as an ethics consultant with patients, families, faculty, trainees and hospital staff as the primary consultant on the Clinical Ethics Consult service. They also function as a point of contact for the clinical ethics committee members and professional societies outside the hospital. The SCEC works with the Program Director on the development and execution of the overall missions and goals of the Pediatric Ethics Program (PEP), and is responsible for developing, coordinating, fundraising and managing day-to-day activities of the PEP with limited oversight. Responsibilities will include management of other ethics consultants, research coordinators and administrative positions as the program grows. The SCEC is in charge of coordinating and delivering many in-house education efforts through workshops and lectures. The SCEC will participate in grant writing, publication and ongoing academic advancement in the field of Pediatric Bioethics.


Minimum Education
B.A. (Required)
Master's Degree (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
5 years Experience in health care with expertise in clinical and organizational ethics preferred (Required)
10 years Experience in student, and trainee clinical supervision, grant writing experience, program development and leadership experience, authorship and publication experience (Preferred)

Functional Accountabilities
Execution of Vision & Strategy for Optimal Organizational Performance
  • In concert with Director, develop and document strategic plan for the Ethics Program that includes short and long-term goals.
  • Develop system for collection and analysis of feedback as part of ongoing program effectiveness evaluation (REDCap).
  • Identify both programmatic and institutional problems and opportunities and address them. Facilitate implementation of improvements with Director.
  • Incorporate findings into performance improvement plans to modify program.
  • Energize stakeholders and sustain their commitment
  • Build relevance throughout the institution for the value and importance of the Pediatric Ethics Program
Senior Consultant on the Clinical Ethics Consult Service
  • Rotates on-call to serve as, or accompany, team leader on ethics conversations, case conferences and ethics consults.
  • Employ knowledge of ethical theory , moral reasoning, pediatric medical issues, hospital policy , and applicable laws.
  • Work collaboratively with other ethics team members, medical team, and patient/family to explore ethically permissible options.
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of both ASBH and AAP policies and guidelines regarding Health Care Ethics Consultation
  • Follow up ethics conversations, case conferences and consults as appropriate. Serve as point of contact with ethics team when team leader and / or assist team leader in following up with other participants.
  • Responsible for writing case reports. Circulate draft to team members for comments/editing, producing final draft in accord with team's recommendation, and enter case info/case notes into Clinical Ethics Consult Service (CECS) REDCap Case Documentation system.
  • Responsible for design of CECS REDCap data dictionary.
Program Management
  • Manage other ethics consultants (volunteer currently). As program grows will additionally manage and onboarding future consultants, research coordinators, and other administrative positions.
  • Participate in grant writing, publication and ongoing academic advancement in the field of Pediatric Bioethics.
  • Assist in creation of a Pediatric Ethics Fellowship and assist in supervision of future fellows and fellowship
Program Liaison
  • Serve as the point of contact and source of information for CEC members, hospital staff, and colleagues at other institutions.
  • Provide administrative oversight of Ethics Program compliance with national standards.
  • Attend ethics-related Grand Rounds and hospital events at which an Ethics Program presence has been requested; filter and report on inquiries or consultation requests to Director.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining and cultivating an ongoing relationship with the appropriate organizations both by attending conferences and by regular literature review.
Clinical Ethics Committee
  • Distribute printed agenda, minutes, and reading materials; track member attendance. Set up WebEx connection and ensure catering arrives on schedule.
  • Participate in case discussions presented by Clinical Ethics Consult Service (CECS) team leaders and team members using knowledge of ethical theory , pediatric medical issues, hospital policy , and applicable laws.
  • If CECS team leader during previous month, present cases in concert with other team members, inviting committee to review and consider.
  • Document cases and case discussion for oversight of CECS and CEC; author meeting minutes and send to Board for review.
  • Schedule policy/procedure reviews, and educational sessions of each CEC meeting.
  • Responsible for the CEC education/ education subcommittee; reporting the status of Education Initiatives to the Director
Ethics Education
  • Develop strategic plan with director for in-house Ethics education effort.
  • Lead efforts in coordinating and delivering Ethics curriculum via workshops and lectures.
  • Conduct needs-based surveys as needed to determine knowledge base and assist in program development and manage evaluations
Leikin Lecture/Ethics Day
  • Work with Director to plan Ethics Day . Develop schedule of events and coordinate Grand Rounds with GME.
  • Coordinate travel and lodgings logistics with speaker; make travel arrangements, and process speaker's reimbursements and honorarium. Reserve rooms for the day's events and oversee catering
  • Ensure event is advertised by designing, procuring and positioning posters and flyers. Coordinate learning objectives with GME.
  • Announce Pediatric Ethicscope Essay Contest at CEC meetings. Serve as point of contact and resource for possible entrants. Solicit entries from staff. Perform as a member of the Essay Judging Committee to choose each year 's winning essay .
Budget and Financial Management
  • May be responsible for appropriate use of funds and resources.
  • Prepare documents and projections to support new programs and the budget planning process.
  • Work with Manager to monitor monthly performance reports and budget variances and resolve discrepancies as needed.
  • Prepare information required for GME reimbursement by federal organizations, including CHGME, to CNMC Finance office
Managing Editor of Pediatric Ethicscope
  • Responsible for conceptualization, design, creation, production, and distribution of Pediatric Ethicscope (PE), with indirect collaboration with Director and involvement of Executive Committee as needed.
  • Attend hospital events to represent Pediatric Ethicscope. Where possible, solicit authors for PE articles. Perform literature searches and other research for PE articles. Do background research on author 's subject and checks authors' sources.
  • Utilize expert knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, In-Design, and Illustrator to design cover, page spreads, and create graphic photographic elements.
  • Design scope of each issue and send to Director for approval. Through dialogue with Director, assemble articles to support overall theme of issue. Maintain queue of articles to draw from for subsequent issues.
  • Work with authors to strengthen articles. Suggest additional lines of argument, additional sources to reference, explain bioethical and philosophical theories when necessary .
  • Proofreads and edits all articles for content, readability, and tone.
  • Photograph authors, Essay Contest Winners and all Ethics Program events. T ake additional subject photographs, source graphs and charts for each article, as appropriate. Research supplemental photography and obtain licenses images
  • In Collaboration with Director and Co-Chair , continue development of PE into a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Continue development and management of Editorial Board and maintain communication with editorial board members.
  • Complete authorship of: design guidelines; production procedures, schedule and milestones; submittal guidelines; conflict of interest policy; data verification procedure; dispute resolution procedure; transparency policy; journal bylaws.
Budget and Financial Management
  • Responsible for creating and managing the PEP budget.
  • Responsible for appropriate use of funds.
  • Prepare documents and projections to support new programs during budget planning process.
  • Responsible for justifying and processing all expenses in concert with the CMO's business office.
  • Provides status reports to the Director, Co-Chair , and when appropriate the Executive Committee and CEC.
