Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an editor to lead our recruitment of top journalistic talent and streamline our newsroom hiring process as we continue to grow. This senior editor will be responsible for setting recruiting strategy and will work to identify prospective candidates, nurture a diverse candidate pipeline and measure our progress in fulfilling our commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The ideal candidate will be a voracious consumer of journalism, able to spot emerging talent before competitors do and keep up with those whose work has already made a difference. We are looking for a creative thinker who can identify future Post journalists who may not have traditional journalism backgrounds.

The senior editor for newsroom recruiting will elevate The Post's presence and positioning at career fairs and conventions and on social platforms. This editor will serve as a trusted partner for hiring managers, working closely with them to understand their needs and identify candidates for current and future openings. A close and collaborative relationship with colleagues in Human Resources will be vital.

Along with an Assistant Editor for Newsroom Recruiting, the senior editor will track recruiting statistics and maintain a detailed database of potential candidates and past applicants to help us advance our goals for diversity, inclusion and equity in the recruiting and hiring process.

We will expect this leader to work closely with masthead editors in continuing to strengthen our ambitious and diverse newsroom and in identifying journalists who can contribute to The Post's mission.

This position, which is part of a major expansion of The Post's editing ranks, is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, it will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter to our jobs portal by Oct 22. All materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Managing Editor Krissah Thompson, to whom this position will report.
