Summary

The Electrical Equipment Repairer position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid ) Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC), in Prosthetics Service. The primary purpose of this position is to disassemble, repair, modify, assemble, troubleshoot, and test electrical wheelchairs that are medically prescribed for eligible beneficiaries.

Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Designs and fabricates wheelchairs and seating system components of unusual or developmental design for complex cases, applies established work methods and procedures to test, diagnose, repair and assemble all electronic equipment associated with motorized wheelchairs/electrical scooters out of factory warranty.
  • Maintain an inventory of all wheelchair parts, manual and electric, and
    must recommend survey and replacement of wheelchairs, manual and electric when repairs are not feasible. The incumbent has access to electronic files containing direct patient information and is expected to maintain such information as required by HIPPA Privacy Act and other applicable Jaws and regulations.
  • Coordinates work priorities so that inpatients, emergency or rush requests are completed in an acceptable and timely manner. Is responsible for all clean up assignments. This includes, but is not limited to, keeping the following areas cleaned, organized and neat: workbench, general work area and storage areas.
  • Participates and /or assists in the evaluation and research studies on new or improved wheelchair and seating devices, components, principles, designs and materials.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards .

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires bending, stooping, and working in cramped positions. Frequently the incumbent is required to assist in lifting of a wheelchair and patient onto mounting blocks and/or transferring of the patient from wheelchair to another chair and back again. The incumbent must frequently lift loads of 20-45 pounds. Incumbent must seek assistance when lifting heavy objects in order to prevent injury.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside well lighted, well ventilated areas, however, the incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of electrical shock, burns, abrasions and cuts, with the risk of infection while working on contaminated chairs. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment as required.
