The Director, Diversity Equity Inclusion and Justice Communications will be at the center of this work.Overall FunctionAs EDF continues our journey to become a more diverse and inclusive organization and an authentic partner to members of the environmental justice community in the US, as well as to frontline organizations in countries where we work around the world, we are hiring a Director of Diversity Equity Inclusion & Justice Communications. The Director, DEIJ Communications will lead the process of building the cultural competency of communicators across the organization while identifying and addressing blind spots and gaps in our communications capabilities.The Director's primary tasks include helping staff apply best practices for communicating authentically and inclusively about EDF's own DEI journey, and about program work aimed at minimizing disparate environmental impacts and ensuring that unfairly burdened communities have a full voice in environmental policymaking. Often, that means communicating about this work in a way that uplifts our EJ partners rather than imposing EDF's narrative on them. The Director will help clarify and align environmental justice and equity communications across all organizational units of EDF, and help forge trusting relationships with the communications staff at community organizations in all the places where EDF works. Reporting directly to the Vice President, Communications, the Director will work closely with theAVP, Diversity Equity & Inclusionand theAVP, Environmental Justice & Equity Initiatives, as well as with staff from Marketing and Communications and the staff-led leadership councils that focus on DEI and EJ. The Director will have primary responsibility for reviewing and approving external and internal communications involving DEIJ matters, and will help train EDF communicators to become more thoughtful and competent in their expression of DEIJ values.The ideal candidate is a highly accomplished communicator with demonstrated experience creating and managing DEIJ-relevant communications in the environmental and social justice space.ResponsibilitiesWrite and/or review internal and public facing DEIJ-relevant marketing and communications materials, including written pieces, visual content and shareable social media content.Suggest edits that reflect best practices for inclusive language and visuals that center equity in a way that resonates with people across the political spectrum.Work one-on-one with internal communicators to teach best practices and address concerns that arise from reviews.Ensure that evergreen DEIJ-related content, for example on website and company intranet, is kept up to date.Help surface relevant and appropriate DEI and EJ stories/ideas from all key EDF geographies that can be told in a credible and authentic manner.Build the capacity of all EDF communicators to express themselves thoughtfully on DEI and EJ matters.Work with DEI and EJ leadership and staff groups to create the necessary tools and resources - including guidelines, glossaries and trainings - to improve cultural competencies ofEDF marketing and communications staff.Forge communications partnerships with external allies from EJ and frontline organizations.Work collaboratively with internal and external marketing and communications specialists.Stay abreast of new developments and emerging tools in the space, and share that knowledge with colleagues in the organization.Participates in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.QualificationsMinimum of 10 years of relevant experience as a communicator or marketer, with five years in the DEI and/or EJ space. Experience in a fast-paced, international, and mission-driven environment a plus.Experience in public health, environmental health and/or environmental fields also a plus.Superior project management and collaboration skills.Strong interpersonal, leadership, problem-solving, and mentoring skills, and a calm, diplomatic demeanor, even in times of intense pressure.Ability to have and facilitate difficult conversations with staff at different levels.Exceptional writing and editing skills, including for digital platforms.Strong verbal communication, listening, presentation and persuasion skills.Demonstrated ability to evaluate visual imagery - including photos, videos and infographics - for how well it illustrates diversity, equity and inclusion, while maintaining aesthetic and technical quality.Extremely sharp organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects, tasks, and files.Proven ability to build productive working relationships with colleagues at multiple organizations, while helping to forge a unified campaign vision.Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
