Job Announcement

Independently specialized maintenance tasks including planning, monitoring, scheduling, and coordinating the work of a welder, carpenter, small engine mechanic and flusher truck operator to assist in carrying out heavy and routine maintenance on the Stormwater infrastructure throughout Fairfax County. Independently performs heavy maintenance project management including planning, monitoring, scheduling, and coordinating the work of heavy maintenance crews and construction contractors to carry out heavy maintenance on infrastructure rehabilitation and infrastructure renewal projects. Performs audits of work procedures, work performance, facility and equipment, and takes corrective action as required. Maintains service levels, construction standards, and production and efficiency standards. Interprets topographic symbols, constructions plans, and specifications as they relate to assigned projects. Ensures compliance with federal, state and county codes. Ensures necessary permits are obtained prior to construction. Provides quality control to ensure construction or maintenance project goals are achieved and meet specifications. Ensure compliance of employees with purchasing requirements. Provides input on bids for equipment, material, and service contracts. Supervise subordinates in the operation of a variety of heavy vehicles and equipment. Provides guidance to senior maintenance supervisors related to crew members, material, and equipment requirements for work order assignments. Leads response teams during snow and flooding emergencies. Perform routine maintenance tasks as fill in work between projects. Assist complaint technicians with responding to citizen complaints during heavy volume periods. Responds to emergency calls during and after normal work hours.

Note: The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, engineering, construction management, or a related field; plus two years of experience in an environmental, engineering or construction management program.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • A valid driver's license.
  • DEQ Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector certification - completion of first required training class within 12 months of hire and certification required within 12 months of date of completion of first required class.
  • DEQ Stormwater Management Inspector certification - completion of first required training class within 12 months of hire and certification required within 12 months of date of completion of first required class.
  • DEQ Stormwater Management Plan Reviewer certification - completion of first required training class within 12 months of hire and certification required within 12 months of date of completion of first required class.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in or knowledge of storm drainage systems and Stormwater management, including infrastructure and maintenance activities.
  • Three years of experience working as a supervisor in a construction and/or trades environment. Strong oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other county staff, citizens, and public agencies.
  • Experience using personal computers with skills in using Microsoft Office Suite applications, such as Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Experience using an ERP, asset management, and work order software programs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt and personal fall arrest harness. Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. With or without reasonable accommodation performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (with assistance, includes removal and replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 pounds). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
