This is a Student Internship opportunity under the Pathways Program.

NIST works with industry and science to advance innovation and improve quality of life. We're looking for a Student Trainee Computer Science, ZP-1599-I/II to join our team!

Responsibilities

This internship will work closely with staff members within project team and group to achieve mutual objectives and goals. They will develop methods and promote standards for evaluation, testing and improvement of technologies. Design, develop and implement computer programs and/or hardware solutions for projects such as Web software development and software in C++ and C to support biometric technology evaluations and cryptographic algorithms. Incumbent may have knowledge of Unix system administration, natural language processing, information retrieval and search engine. Incumbent may run experiments for measuring explainable AI and coding, run deep learning algorithms, develop computer programs for circuit optimization techniques and conduct research on elliptic curve cryptography and applications in cybersecurity. Responsible for documenting progress and results. Prepare and present briefings and demonstrations of technical progress to NIST management and to other agency sponsors. Prepare and present material that documents project accomplishments to NIST customers including industry, academia, and other agencies.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

For ZP-I Consideration:

You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree in Computer Science OR a degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science and at least 15 of the 30 semester hours include any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

For ZP-II Consideration: Graduate
You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree in Computer Science OR a degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science and at least 15 of the 30 semester hours include any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

In additional to the above, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education or Applicants may qualify based on superior academic achievement and completion of a bachelor's degree.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.

All applicants must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, degree) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled). In addition, you must be enrolled in school for the duration of the appointment. You will be required to provide documentation to support your eligibility for the program.

Applicants must possess a grade point average (GPA) of a 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0. Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9.If you are submitting an acceptance/enrollment letter from your university you MUST also upload your last known unofficial transcript containing your cumulative GPA. If you do not provide proof of GPA, you will be disqualified from further consideration.

PROOF OF ENROLLMENT FOR THE CURRENT SEMESTER. This may be documented on your official/unofficial transcripts, a course schedule, an acceptance letter from your university for future enrollment, or an official letter of enrollment from the university registrar's office or a university counselor, as long as your enrollment for the current semester is clearly documented. If you do not provide proof of enrollment for the current semester, you will be disqualified from further consideration.

If you are currently enrolled, but in your last semester/quarter of completing your degree/certificate requirements, you must show proof of continuing education, such as an acceptance letter, or you will be disqualified from further consideration.

This position has an education requirement. Transcripts must be submitted to validate that the education requirement has been met. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package. However, an official copy will be required prior to a final offer of employment.

Additional information

The physical worksite for this position is located in Montgomery County, Maryland. However, the Information Technology Laboratory is currently under a mandatory telework posture due to the COVID-19 pandemic; therefore, this position is currently under a 100 percent telework schedule. The position's telework schedule will likely change in the future when Information Technology Laboratory moves away from its mandatory telework posture. At that time, the incumbent will be expected to report to the physical work site in accordance with the updated status requirements of their supervisor. The nature and scope of future telework opportunities will be subject to the unit's telework policy, any applicable bargaining unit agreements, and supervisory approval. Payment of relocation expenses, as applicable, will be paid in accordance with this Job Opportunity Announcement. Non-compliance with the supervisor's telework-schedule requirement could result in adverse action, including separation.

As a part of the Pathways Internship Program, the appointment may be extended until the selectee's educational program requirements have been completed.

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION: Program participants may be non-competitively converted to a career-conditional, career, or term position within 120 days of successful completion of the program, but there is no requirement to do so.

To be eligible for conversion, the intern must:
  • Meet the OPM qualification standards for the position to which s/he will be converted
  • Have completed academic study from a qualifying institution
  • Have completed at least 640 hours of work experience while in the Internship program; up to 320 hours may be credited from other qualifying federal Internship appointments or non-federal work experience toward the 640 hours
  • Receive a favorable recommendation by an official of the Agency
Pathways participants may be converted to a permanent or term position within any NIST career path. If converted to permanent or term position, the full performance level would be: ZP-III
