The Geospatial Technician will work with programmers and DHA staff to create maps for data visualization for the Defense Health Agency's J-5 Analytics and Evaluation Division.

This is a part-time position

  • Extract geocoded data supplied in excel, SAS, ArcGIS or a variety of other platforms and convert them into publishable quality maps.
  • Analyze GIS data to identify spatial relationships and /or display results of analysis, using maps, graphs, or tabular data.
  • Enter data into GIS databases, using techniques such as coordinate geometry, keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning or automatic conversion to vectors or conversion of other sources of digital data.
  • Maintain or modify existing GIS databases.
  • Review existing or incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness of documentation.
  • Provide technical support within the company to users regarding the maintenance, development, or operation of GIS databases, equipment, or applications.
  • Assist with the development of point papers, reports, supporting graphics, briefings, spreadsheets, and other formal documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor's degree in sociology, geography, epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, computer science or health services research.
  • GIS Certificate may be used in lieu of Degree
  • 2+ years of experience working with ArcGIS.
  • GIS Technician must have expertise in working with ArcGIS to create publication quality maps.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must have the ability to pass a DHA Background Check.
  • Proficiency in the use of standard Microsoft Office software applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required Working Knowledge of or experience in military health systems data, MTFs (parent and child), DMIS IDs or related.
  • Experience with SAS and/or Python would be a plus.
  • Experience with descriptive statistics, univariate and multivariate data analysis and translating data into actionable information.
  • Ability to maintain a high standard of quality assurance and attention to detail, including creating and implementing data quality control processes.
  • Ability to provide continual attention to detail in composing required reporting.
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers, external contacts, and excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to receive and apply feedback in a professional manner; ability to convey both positive and constructive feedback to others in a professional and effective manner.
  • Ability to pass requirements, training, and forms per the DHA's Onboarding Checklist.
  • Ability to self-start, work independently and with a team.
  • Possess strong problem-solving skills.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task in a high stress, performance-based environment.

Ability to travel up to 10% as required.
