Position Information
Please note: These part-time vacancies may be filled by either a Public Health Nurse Practitioner or a Certified Physician Assistant.

The Arlington County Fire Department (ACFD) is hiring multiple Public Health Nurse Practitioners and/or Certified Physician Assistants to work within the Support Services branch of the Fire Department. These positions will be part of a team supporting the Emergency Triage, Treat and Transport (ET3) Program Treatment-in-Place interventions for the Arlington County Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department. These positions will provide expert telemedical consultation and definitive medical care in real time to citizens who are identified for treatment-in-place care by EMS providers when dispatched on a 911 call. These positions will assist covering the 24/7 shifts of the 911 call center. Hours per week will not exceed 24.

Specific Duties:
  • Provides telemedical and in-person medical consultation and supervision for ET3 treatment-in-place services provided by on-scene Emergency Medical Services staff;
  • Reviews identified patients' EMS medical records and available on-scene medical data to ensure medical care documentation is accurate and complies with standards;
  • Collaborates with on-scene EMS personnel during patient examination and gathers clinical data to determine appropriate treatment or transport to medical facility;
  • Directs on-scene EMS providers to obtain appropriate laboratory data utilizing available field measurement tools;
  • Prescribes medications and calculates dosage levels for patient care;
  • Consults with other professionals, including the ACFD medical control physician, regarding patient care and recommended treatment; and
  • Confers with patients' families to gather history, provide information regarding patient care, and instructions for follow-up needed.

Selection Criteria
Public Health Nurse Practitioner:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from a college or university program accredited by the American Nurses' Association;
  • Graduation from an education program accredited by the American Nurses' Association, the National League for Nursing, or the Joint Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine as an approved Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
  • Prescriptive authority in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and
  • Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia within 60 days of hire.
Physician Assistant:
  • Completion of requirements for graduation from an accredited four-year university with a bachelor's degree;
  • A master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program;
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants;
  • Licensure from the Virginia State Board of Medicine as a Physician Assistant within 60 days of hire; and
  • One year of full-time experience as a certified Physician Assistant.
Desirables for both positions: Preference may be give to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Pre-hospital care (either Fire or EMS);
  • Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care, or Critical Care;
  • Providing services for a local government; and/or
  • Experience working in telehealth.
