Category TQE - Thorlabs Quantum Electronics Location Quantum Electronics - Jessup, Maryland Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time Description Purpose of the Position As a manufacturing technician in the Thorlabs Quantum Electronics Unit, you will work among a team of individuals developing, manufacturing, and troubleshooting complex optoelectronic components and assemblies for our customers. Day-to-day activities will require working in a fast-paced environment within the manufacturing department, as well as assisting with various R&D and testing activities. The location of this position will be in Jessup, MD. Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to: Complete projects related to optoelectronic device production according to engineering instructions, technical manuals, written work instructions, mechanical drawings, and/or schematics. Proper handling of critical and fragile optical components. Assembly and testing of electro-optics devices and systems o Assembly may include: epoxy bonding small parts, wire & ribbon bonding, handling of optical fiber, optical fiber alignment and coupling, soldering, seam sealing, optical and electrical testing o Delivery of defect free product according to production schedule Monitor product quality throughout production o Produce detailed documentation on product failures and returns to notify engineering of conditions requiring more complex resolution, recurring failures, potential service issues, or identified new product limitations. Make recommendations for potential design or procedural changes. o Perform system diagnostics and review of production units to determine operating performance and potential causes or areas of quality control failures. o Diagnose hardware and software problems, run appropriate computer programs, analyze data, isolate areas of potential or actual problems and determine any required modifications to suit current requirements and resolve problems. Maintenance of production and test equipment o Verify and track performance of production and test equipment. o Work with the production engineering team to update current or develop new production tools. o Work with equipment vendors as needed in supporting production. Support development, evaluation, and documentation of new products and processes. Consistently look for opportunities to improve processes. Follow clean room protocol. Maintain a safe and clean working environment through compliance with procedures, policies and regulations. In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for: Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures. Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments. The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position. Physical Activities: Ability to lift up to 50lbs for brief periods. Must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small or sensitive. Work requires regular use of a microscope. Work may be sedentary, could require standing or sitting for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. Work is done in a clean room environment and requires a clean room suit to be worn. Technicians may come in contact with but not limited to acetone and epoxy. Work areas may be noisy at times. Qualifications Experience : Minimum 2 years of experience in a manufacturing, engineering, or field service environment or 4 years of education with degree in a technical area. Education: Minimum Associates Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related technical discipline or US Military Electronics Training. Specialized Knowledge and Skills : Self-starting individual with a strong attention to detail. Strong ability to work well in a team environment, and comply with high quality standards. Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities. Must have proficiency working with computers and Microsoft Office. Familiarity with standard electronic test equipment (eg oscilloscope, function generator). Familiarity with general hand tools. Basic soldering skills. Good written and verbal communication skills Other : Potential ability and willingness to travel both domestically and internationally to customer sites.
