The Assistant Director Direct Response reports to the Director of Direct Response within the Marketing and Communications function. This member of Children's National Hospital Foundation plays a key integral role in the coordination and execution of an integrated Direct Response program across all channels. In this role, s/he supports the Director of Direct Response to execute a program that increases unrestricted revenue, increases donor retention, and grows the Foundation's pipeline. The Assistant Director manages the development of content and creative working closely with the Foundation's Creative Director and the agency. This work requires regular collaboration with editorial, creative and data teams as well as special events and marketing. The Assistant Director takes initiative, works independently, thinks creatively and is focused on details and compelling content to deliver the highest quality Direct Response program that deliver results.


Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
4 years technical development experience (fundraising, donor relations) (Required)
2 years experience in direct response execution (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Excellent writing skills and command of language; able to deliver a clear, concise copy
Attention to detail, including accuracy and consistency of messaging, style and tone
Ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders
Flexibility/Ability to juggle projects to meet tight deadlines
Strong organizational and project management skills

Functional Accountabilities
  • Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience.
  • Through themes, moments in time, etc., seek to identify new opportunities to fundraise with Direct Response audiences.
  • Coordinate with internal strategy teams to reach new segments with proper messaging.
  • Create and implement direct response tactics including but not limited to email, bill marketing, print and digital banners.
  • Manage large volumes of email, including creative matrices and proofing.
  • In collaboration with cross-functional teams, create tactical marketing plans for specific campaigns consistent with mission and brand identity.
  • Successfully co-manage the execution of Direct Response campaigns in support of revenue, donor retention and pipeline goals.
Project Management
  • Employ strong project management skills, demonstrating the ability to set and meet deadlines for multiple simultaneous projects while maintaining accuracy and efficiency in deliverables.
  • Work with internal teams and outside ad agencies to develop, coordinate and execute planned campaigns and promotions.
  • Serve as collaborative member of Marketing and and active member of the Editorial & Development Strategy team to write, edit and produce Marketing and Communications projects.
  • Utilize measurement, recording and project management systems at the Foundation to ensure clear, accurate reporting of Direct Response activities.
Quality Assurance

  • Ensure that Direct Response materials are prepared at the highest level of accuracy.
  • Keep Managers apprised of potential risks and other key nuances, which may impact projects.
