Stormwater Maintenance Inspector

An Overview
The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) Public Works Services Division is seeking a Stormwater Maintenance Inspector to perform managerial work functions in a diversified public works environment. Specific work associated with the position includes overseeing daily operations and activities for the Stormwater Section of Public Works Services. This work is technical work of the inspection of storm and sanitary sewers. Work is performed under the direction of the Environmental Program Manager for Storm sewer.

The Opportunity
  • Performs more advanced engineering inspections;
  • Inspects work from customers and performs internal inspections;
  • Inspects BMP’s to make sure they are installed correctly;
  • Inspects Stormwater requests and reports from Citizens, Internal staff and Contractors
  • Enforce E&S, SWPPP and MOT plans for contractors that are contracted by PWS;
  • Attend community meetings as required;
  • Prepares, and keeps documentation on work done on a daily basis;
  • Assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of lower level inspectors;
  • Assists in writing the scope of work for the contractors to complete;
  • Estimates cost and material requirements for each job, checks actual job costs against project costs, checks/bills received, and processes payments to contractors;
  • Reviews plans and specification to ensure compliance with City Standards, Department of Environmental Quality and Virginia Department of Transportation;
  • Provides construction management to include, but not limits to, construction agreements, change orders, addendums and amendments contributing to resolving construction conflicts, and possessing the knowledge and ability to resolve and implement resolutions;
  • Works with, attends meetings, provides reports for the PWS Stormwater team and the overall stormwater team on the inspection and construction of stormwater projects
  • Acts as a liaison for property owners and contractors;
  • Assists with inclement weather events (ie. snow removal operations, severe weather events);
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this role you must possess a High School Diploma or GED; completion of vocational or college-level courses in surveying principles and methods, civil engineering, or building construction; five years of experience in responsible, paraprofessional engineering position in construction or surveying; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

To be considered a preferred candidate for this position, you must also possess considerable experience in the construction of clay, concrete, ductile iron, PVC storm drain and sanitary sewers, and asphalt and concrete for restoration. Principles and practices in Civil engineering, knowledge of modern principles of surveying and methods of soil engineering, and the ability to oversee contractors and secure their cooperation, as well as the general public, and ability to prepare comprehensive estimates, reports and maintain accurate records.
