Summary

The position serves as a key member of the senior leadership team in the Division and provides strategic and scientific direction regarding activities related to the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) within the Division and outside of CDC at other federal agencies (including the State Department and the U.S. Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC)).

Responsibilities

As a Epidemiologist, you will:
  • Develop, implement and evaluate standard and novel approaches for the epidemiology and surveillance of HIV/AIDS and TB, including epidemiologic studies, surveillance activities, and surveys in clinical settings, in general populations, and in key populations highly affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • Lead, plan, direct, and advise on a broad portfolio of intramural and extramural activities to characterize persons at risk for HIV infection, who recently acquired AIDS, who have AIDS related morbidities, and/or who are being treated for HIV/AIDS and who may be receiving prophylactic treatment for the prevention of HIV transmission.
  • Lead and oversee program policy and guidelines to be translated to systems and level to determine the most efficient and effective methods to improve the collection, management, analysis, and use of HIV/AIDS and TB surveillance and survey information.
  • Provide expert advice, consultation and guidance to improve epidemiology, surveillance, and surveys of HIV/AIDS and TB.
  • Support and strengthen global and country capacity to conduct surveillance and surveys, to use surveillance and survey data to monitor and evaluate HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment programs, health system strengthening, other related global health programs, and health systems through the development of standards, guidelines, curricula, and other tools.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include directing scientific, technical and/or programmatic epidemiological activities related to public health programs..

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
