Summary

This position is part of the Office of the Assistant General Counsel for Civilian Nuclear Programs, Office of the General Counsel, Department Of Energy (DOE). As a General Attorney, you will perform a variety of professional legal work, including provision of legal advice and services with respect to questions, statutes, regulations, practices, or other matters concerning nuclear energy and related topics.

Responsibilities

As a full performance level GS15, General Attorney, you will:
  • Provide analyses, interpretations, and opinions to assigned DOE offices on a variety of cases and issues that include legal and policy positions on complex and difficult matters.
  • Represent DOE in meetings with peers, management and officials of other Federal agencies, committees of Congress, state and local governments, representatives of foreign governments and representatives.
  • Draft legal policies and procedures for use in the DOE in relation to suits from various Courts on behalf of, or against the United States, rising from activities of the DOE.
  • Analyze pending, proposed and potential litigation; prosecutes cases; negotiates settlements to avoid expensive and time-consuming litigation; and provides legal advice based on the weight of evidence.
  • Perform legal research and provide recommendations based on the legal principles involved.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
All candidates must meet the minimum education requirements of successful completion of a full course of study in a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) with a professional law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) and must be a current member in good standing of the bar of a state, territory of the United States, District of Columbia, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Have a professional law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) and membership in a State or District of Columbia bar; and Three years of professional (attorney) legal experience and advanced educational attainments that clearly indicate the ability to independently perform complex legal work; and One additional year of professional (attorney) experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to that of an attorney at the grade immediately below the one being filled.

Education

Candidates must be a graduate of a law school accredited by the American Bar Association with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) degree.
