Summary

Serves as a Supervisory Aerospace Engineer in the Cryogenics and Fluids Branch, Instrument Systems and Technology Division. Provides technical and administrative guidance to subordinate employees. Assigned tasks involve the study of radiation, convection, and conduction heat transfer within solids, fluids, and vacuum environments, as well as low-temperature phenomenon. The supervisory engineer will also provide Design/Analysis/Build/Test support to assigned projects.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises work, such as, production, fabrication, operation, certification, and/or maintenance of aerospace cryogenic cooling systems or integrally associated equipment.
  • Provides mentoring and guidance to Branch team members.
  • Plans, researches, designs, develops, tests, evaluates, performs cost analyses and program and project management.
  • Monitors contracted work either externally or on-site in the facility of the contractor.
  • Conducts specialized studies on aerospace cryogenic systems, which may include overall and individual major systems components, and additional equipment encompassed in the structure, to ensure desired performance, suitability, and effectiveness.
  • Shares management and supervisory duties with the Branch management team, focusing on strategic goals.
  • Serve as an expert advisor and consultant in the areas of thermal control of cryogenically cooled instrument systems and low-temperature physics.
  • Provides technical direction on complex studies and directing various thermal tests, including test planning, instrumentation requirements test monitoring and correlation.
  • Serve as a senior technical contact for engineering projects/requirements, consulting and advising management on operational and planning issues.
  • Develop and facilitate technology transfer and commercialization efforts in cryogenic technology and serve as the focal point for identification of technologies that are of significant interest to NASA or have achieved significant commercial use.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

GS-14: To qualify at the GS-14 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level; serving as a technical expert with a leadership role in the areas of heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluids, physics and experimental techniques, consulting and advising management on technical issues; performing managerial functions such as planning, implementing directing and coordinating employee duties, travel, training and funding is preferred.

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science, or other field of physical science.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
