An Overview

The Registered Nurse provides direct and indirect professional nursing care to participants at the Adult Day Services Center in the Division of Aging & Adult Services. Assess health needs of each participant and determines appropriateness for ADSC program. In the absence of the ADSC Director, the nurse has operational responsibility along with the Activity Director. Develops individual health care plans in include nutrition, exercise and mental stimulation. On-going assessments as well as continued observation of participants. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of the Adult Day Services Center (ADSC) in the Division of Aging & Adult Services (DAAS).

What You Should Bring

The ideal candidate should have good knowledge of nursing and clinic policies and procedures; good knowledge of approved medical terminology and abbreviations; good knowledge of the function, use, maintenance, and safety precautions of all equipment used; ability to clinically evaluate patients/clients before medicating; ability to monitor clients on a variety of medications; ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to provide nursing services to difficult and complex patient and client cases; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships between staff, emergency employees, administration, physicians, visitors and patients; ability to chart accurately, legibly, and completely all entries on medical records/controlled substance inventories.

The Opportunity
  • Provides nursing services of center participants to ensure continuity of care;
  • Provides nursing services to possibly difficult and/or complex participants;
  • Provide direct care to physically and cognitively impaired participants, including toileting and changing soiled clothing;
  • Performs CPR & 1st Aid in an emergency;
  • Provides direct patient care to include administering medications and assists with all the patient activities of daily living;
  • Provides information, training, guidance and assistance of health care concerns to patients;
  • Ensures that emergency and other equipment is operational, drugs on hand are current, and supply is adequate;
  • Participates with staffing for intake, annual review and care planning/evaluation;
  • Assesses mental health of clients, nutrition, cardiac, respiratory, and other vital systems;
  • Prepares reports and documents as needed and required;
  • Performs related work as required.

The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing; eligibility for, or current licensure with the State Board of Nursing of the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse. or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Licensure with the State Board of Nursing of the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse. At least one year of experience working with geriatric population in an adult day program setting. At least one year of working knowledge of Medicaid regulations and Virginia Department of Social Services regulations. Excellent record keeping and documentation skills. Expertise in administering medication; At least one year of experience with geriatric population. Fluent and Bilingual in both English and Spanish. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must have the ability to acquire appropriate certifications for Defensive Driving and Food Manager’s Certification within 90days of employment appointment date.

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to: FBI/Federal Records Check; VA State Child Abuse/Neglect Registry; Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Database; Verification of education/certifications; Drug screening; and Driver's license.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9:00AM - 5:30PM.
