We have convened a uniquely powerful and vibrant community of Rising Leader alumni - 8,000 and growing - who are driving change throughout our institutions, communities, and nation.The OpportunityWe are seeking a Controller to be a big-picture thinker and creative problem solver who can effectively prioritize multiple responsibilities; a team-builder, people-developer, and advocate for building subordinate's skills; and a skilled communicator, able to describe complex issues simply, influence outcomes, and articulate MLT's long-term sustainability model.Reporting to the VP, Finance and Development, the Controller is responsible for the oversight and management of all Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) accounting, reporting, compliance, and recordkeeping activities. The Controller leads all day-to-day accounting operations of a budget of $30 million with functional responsibility for accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants / funding administration, and directs the activities of the Accounting staff.Under the guidance and direction of the VP of Finance & Development, the Controller will build, evolve, and strengthen the Accounting function as MLT continues our journey of unprecedented growth, ensuring that MLT has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct successful (ie, flawless) audits. The Controller also works closely with the Director of Finance, Planning & Administration and MLT leaders and staff, to both educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures and to ensure that the accounting function supports program operations by positioning our teams for growth.MLT has a very commercial focus; significant rigor in how we implement and sustain our vision; and a high "performance bar" for talent that ensures we engage exceptional teammates who are aligned with our values and match the organization's near and long term needs. Responsibilities: Accounting LeadershipFully grasp both the micro-level details underlying MLT's Accounting function as well as the big-picture, strategic business drivers in order to serve as a thought partner to the VP, Finance to identify potential problems and opportunities, prioritizing what's most important and communicating key concepts to senior management, board members, and MLT staff.Oversee the efforts of the Accounting team to coordinate all audit activity.Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.Consistently analyze accounting data and present reports accurately and on time; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of MLT's financial status.Act as point of contact for banking and credit needs; research and recommend procedures and policies related to future treasury and endowment opportunitiesManage federal, state, and local tax compliance, and work with government entities to annually reaffirm MLTs not for profit status. Oversee all financial, project / program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant / fund period; collate financial reporting materials required for corporate and foundation grants.Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.Responsibilities: Team LeadershipManage the performance and leverage the strengths of the Accounting team members by clarifying roles and responsibilities, and developing and implementing training opportunities to maximize and reach optimal individual, team, and MLT organizational goals.Provide leadership by strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels regarding accounting policies, procedures, and requirements.Qualifications: This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled accounting professional with 9+ years of accounting experience, ideally with an early-career grounding in accounting and audit roles, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will ideally have experience in a growing nonprofit with multiple programs producing high-visibility outcomes. Specific requirements include:An experienced, hands-on strategic thinker with bias toward action who will own, in partnership with the VP, responsibility for the Accounting function.Bachelor's degree required; CPA and / or MBA preferred.Experience leading an Accounting function, with the demonstrated capability to mentor, train, and develop a diverse team, which includes the foresight and ability to delegate and achieve goals through subordinates.Demonstrated experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.A track record of grants management, especially related to compliance and reporting.Technologically savvy, with an advanced knowledge of leveraging accounting and reporting software.Keen analytic, organization, and problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation that goes beyond simple reporting, to issue identification and recommended solutions.Ability to translate effectively complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels, including finance and non-finance staff, with the demonstrated experience to effectively communicate key data, including building and delivering presentations to senior management, board members, or other stakeholders.
