Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with providers and pathologist to ensure required forms are completed, proper laboratory tests are ordered, processed and shipped to outside reference laboratories.
  • Utilize all resources to include Reference Laboratory websites to determine the appropriate specimen requirements and shipping standards for specialized testing submission.
  • Coordinate with hospital staffs to ensure proper collection and processing of specimens for reference laboratory testing.
  • Prepare test orders.
  • Prepare samples for testing to include labeling, centrifugation, decanting and aliquoting, etc.
  • Perform specimen processing utilizing the Laboratory Information System (Composite Health Care System) in preparation of performing testing in the various sections that comprise the Core Laboratory.
  • Maintain patient results status by verifying and certifying results in laboratory computer system.
  • Answer incoming calls for the laboratory service; finding and relaying accurate information or referring the caller to technical personnel.
  • Maintain stock levels throughout the specimen processing area and order supplies, as necessary.
  • May be assigned to other laboratory operations such as Chemistry, Serology, Hematology, and Urinalysis, sections including specimen receipt, preparation, analysis, and reporting of results.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working in a clinical laboratory performing the full range of procedures such as specimen processing, specimen shipping, chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, phlebotomy, immunohematology and/or bacteriology. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Selective Placement Factor: Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT), or other organization deemed comparable by the Office of Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD HA) or their designee, Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (CCLM) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT)/Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is required.
