Videos Videos Duties Help Duties Summary NASA is seeking an experienced senior-level individual to serve as a Ground System Engineer for one of several major projects at the Goddard Space Flight Center, such as the Mars Sample Return (MSR) Capture Containment and Return System (CCRS). The selected candidate will serve as the Deputy to the supporting Ground System Manger. Responsibilities include end-to-end ground systems engineering which includes developing requirements, operations concepts, and the ground architecture. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee. Coordinating and leading the technical activities of senior and other ground system and ground subsystem engineers and interact effectively with flight project management. The work may include the entire spectrum of ground systems. Developing and implementing risk mitigation strategies; providing directions for the infusion of new technologies into these Exploration and Science efforts, ensuring that technology advancements are successfully transitioned to flight-ready status. Developing, analyzing, managing, and defending technical and resource requirements. Leading technical analyses of assigned systems and/or ground system requirements and trade studies. Directing, managing, and leading the development and implementation of highly complex and sophisticated computer-based subsystems that are state-of-the-art. Assessing technical progress against established schedules/resources. Performing data systems and analysis work as an agency expert in integrating requirements necessary for development and operations of data systems and/or ground data systems. Performing software systems engineering for project planning, requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and sustaining engineering; Developing schedules and cost impact for proposed requirements. Preparing/presenting organizational and project technical reviews and status briefings. Serves on Agency and government committees and working groups as a Subject Matter Expert. Technical leadership and engineering technical authority for all ground system elements, including end-to-end data flow from the spacecraft/instrument to the end user interface. This position may require a one year trial period Qualifications In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Applying software system engineering theories, principles, concepts, standards, and/or methodologies to develop ground system elements for aerospace operation; Utilizing a variety of programming languages, operating systems and/or engineering practices and principles to solve complex ground data system element problems; Contributing to new designs or techniques in ground data system development. To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level: Leading a group of engineers in testing and developing innovative ground/mission operations for aerospace support software; Reviewing requirements and specifications of organizational systems and providing expert assessments on recommended changes to system requirements and design specifications; Making contributions to long-range project planning and to the formulation, modification, and determination of overall objectives.
