POSITION OVERVIEW: Under the direction of the Fire Chief, commands a fire company during an assigned shift. This position plans, develops, coordinates and executes work relating to the activities, functions and programs related to assigned shift or staff position. The Shift Fire Captain will be under general supervision of the Fire Chief. RESPONSIBILITIES: Responds to fire and emergency alarms and establishes Incident Command. Directs subordinates in extinguishing fires, rescue work and protecting property; assesses conditions, lays out fire attack strategy and directs deployment of personnel and equipment to effectively accomplish missions. Determines the firefighting methods to be deployed and the need for additional support and request for same; remains in command until fire or other emergency is over or when relieved by a superior officer. Directs salvage, rescue, and overhaul activities. Supervises and may personally administer first aid, CPR, or other EMS duties. Supervises station activities including the maintenance and upkeep of buildings, grounds and equipment. Plans and conducts drills and training sessions in firefighting, rescue operations, use of firefighting & rescue tools and equipment, department policies, procedures, rules and regulations, laws and becoming familiar with the conditions and environment of the assigned areas. These drills and training sessions will be conducted during daylight or nighttime hours. Plans work assignments, company pre-fire plan inspections, and fire hydrant inspections. Informs tenants of fire hazards and code violations. Consults with superiors on unusual problems and situations relating to fire hazards, code violations, and personnel. Shall give all necessary information and instruction to those designated to act in their place. Obtains skills in the area of firefighting, rescue operations and EMS emergencies. Maintains records, log books, computer logs and prepares reports on station activities, Fire -- Rescue - EMS emergencies, condition of equipment, status of personnel and supplies. Other duties that may be assigned by the Fire Chief or Project Manager. QUALIFICATIONS: US Citizen Must be at least 18 years old to apply GED or High School Diploma Valid drivers' license Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening At least one (1) year experience as a full-time Lieutenant with the RFAAP Fire/Rescue Department Firefighter II Haz-Mat Awareness & Operations Fire Officer I & II Fire Instructor I & II Fire Inspector I & II EMT-Basic EVOC Class III Basic Pump Operations or Driver/Operator-Engine WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work during inclement weather. Heavy work: Exerting up to 200 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must have visual and audio acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment, machines such as fire equipment and apparatuses, and clearing barrels. May be subject to outdoor conditions including extreme temperatures and weather Subject to high noise levels Subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals May be required to be fitted for and/or wear a respirator Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, often without breaks, and may be required to climb stairs or ladders and walk up inclines and on uneven terrain. Must meet all physical and psychological standards as required by the contract Travel may be required Must be able to perform all tasks of a Firefighter/EMS professional. Must be able to perform tasks while wearing an SCBA and full firefighting PPE. Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching and bending throughout the workday.
