Are you passionate about Navigation, Guidance, and Control (NG&C)?Would you enjoy high-fidelity, detailed analysis of GPS and inertial navigation system performance on cutting edge ballistic and hypersonic missile systems using real flight test data?Do you want to work with and learn from specialists in inertial navigation and state estimation, and ultimately be an authority in the field?If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!We are seeking a dedicated engineer with a background in Inertial Navigation and Kalman Filters to help us evaluate the performance of our Nation's most sophisticated hypersonic and ballistic missile systems.As a NG&C Engineer, your primary responsibilities will be to Develop and understand high fidelity, physics-based error models for inertial sensors used in Inertial Navigation Systems.Analyze flight data collected from navigation sensors including inertial measurement units (IMU), Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, and other sensor systems (eg RADAR).Develop proficiency with analysis tools and methods to understand overall flight performance of ballistic missile and reentry systems.Contribute your experience and expertise as a technical advisor and mentor to junior staff.Support the design, development, and maintenance of flight analysis software and procedures required to evaluate current and future flight system performance.Present our work to a broad internal audience as well as sponsors and external organizations at working groups, post-flight briefings, and program reviews.QualificationsYou meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you Have a BS in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics (or closely related technical field) with 5 or more years of relevant technical experience.Have professional experience or extensive coursework in any of the following: Estimation Methods (Kalman Filters), Inertial Navigation GPS or RADAR.Have a strong sense of curiosity to understand how and why a system works and the ambition to follow up on that curiosity.Have experience in Matlab or C++Are able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you Have an MS (or above) in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics (or closely related technical field) with 3 or more years of relevant professional experience.Have proficiency with simulation tools (functional or covariance) that predict the performance of dynamic systems.Currently hold an active Secret or higher level clearance.Why work at APL?The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) brings world-class expertise to our nation's most critical defense, security, space and science challenges.
