Life Science Business Mentor The George Mason University, Mason Enterprise Center invites applications for three (3) Life Science Business Mentor positions. Virginia SBDC: The Virginia SBDC is an organization of 27 local Small Business Development Center offices across Virginia providing professional business counseling, training, and business resources to help grow and strengthen Virginia businesses. ICAP: The Innovation Commercialization Assistance Program (ICAP) is focused on helping Virginia-based technology and innovation-driven startups on their path to success. ICAP works with startups to provide support along their entire journey towards scaling - from the early idea stage, all the way through working on Series A level of funding. This is accomplished through experiential learning programs and one-on-one advising with a team of experienced entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. These services are offered at no cost and all advising is confidential. About the Position: The Innovation Commercialization Assistance Program (ICAP), a program of the Virginia Small Business Development Center (Virginia SBDC) housed at George Mason University, is hiring three (3) Life Science Business Mentors (the "Mentors") to support early-to seed stage life science companies across the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Mentors will work in collaboration with leadership from VA Bio-Connect, a new initiative led by Virginia Bio and comprised of a multidisciplinary team of regional leaders to strengthen Virginia's Bioeconomy. We are seeking professionals with experience in the life science sector who can assist companies to advance commercially relevant technologies through the commercialization path that include the regulatory process. The Mentors will be part of a team, possessing complementary and diverse skills, that provide participating Virginia-based life science companies with guidance and support as they work to achieve key milestones. The Mentors will assist companies by connecting them with existing entrepreneurial programs and resources, such as the Hampton Roads' 757 Accelerate, Roanoke's Regional Area Mentoring Program (RAMP), and Richmond's Lighthouse Labs. The Mentors will provide life science companies with deep and granular assistance in areas such as (but not limited to): business strategic planning and guidance, financial strategies, investor outreach and pitch support, product development, navigating regulatory pathways, strengthening management teams and advisory boards, and fostering partnerships. In addition to working one-on-one with clients, Mentors will also become involved in the regional and statewide entrepreneurial ecosystems. This includes engaging potential and existing partners, developing client pipelines, presenting at relevant events including VA Bio-Connect monthly entrepreneurship workshop, and traveling throughout the region for in-person offerings. ICAP is seeking to hire Mentors with subject matter expertise in one or more of the areas listed below. Eligible candidates should have experience in the area(s), with special priority given to those that have successfully launched and had an exit with a company in that field. Medical devices and/or equipment Therapeutics and/or Vaccines Diagnostics Digital Health Advanced manufacturing FDA Regulations The Mentors will report to the ICAP Director through all phases of client and partner scheduling, assistance, and follow-up. The Mentors will work independently, hosting meetings and discussions with clients and prospective clients, as well as partners and potential partners, without direct supervision or requirement for prior approval.There are 3 positions available and they will be Part-time with benefits, at 32 hours per week. Responsibilities: Responsible for the Mentoring/Advising of Entrepreneurs;Meet one-on-one with entrepreneurs to provide strategic and tactical guidance; Meet as a mentor team with entrepreneurs to provide strategic and tactical guidance;Refer clients to appropriate resources when needed;Maintain professional and ethical standards;Work collegially with clients and team memberProvide timely and accurate reporting on client activities; Partner Development; Identify, meet with, and develop ongoing partnership relationshipsAssist localities and regions, as able and approved by the ICAP Director, with their entrepreneurial ecosystem development activities;Work collegially with partners;Provide timely and accurate reporting on partner activities; Present to partner organization on startup related topic; Present to the ICAP community on startup related topics; Fully prepare and execute high-quality presentations that include promotion of the Virginia SBDC and official funding partners; Travel to meetings and events as part of ongoing duties;Submit timely travel expense reports as noted in George Mason policy documents;Report activities as prescribed by the Virginia SBDC and Mason;Provide timely, accurate, and immediately available client reports. Required Qualifications: Master's degree in Business, Life Science or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience; Subject Matter Expertise in one or more of the following:Medical devices and/or equipment Therapeutics and/or Vaccines Diagnostics Digital Health Advanced manufacturing FDA Regulations Executive (C-level) management experience in life science company/s;Experience developing/commercializing biomedical, pharmaceutical, biologics, advanced materials, medical devices and/or software; Experience in starting, launching, and exiting a technology startup; Experience raising non-dilutive, pre-seed, seed and successive rounds of angel and venture capital funds; Up-to-date knowledge on current trends and activities within the startup life science ecosystem; Ability to deliver direct feedback in a professional manner; Ability to travel to meetings and events throughout the Commonwealth;Excellent communication and multitasking skills; Ability to engage the regional and statewide entrepreneurial ecosystems, in collaboration with the ICAP Director and VA Bio-Connect Program Director, to develop and engage new and existing partners, identify pipelines for potential clients, and provide value to relevant organizations (where relevant and possible); Ability to develop a plan, to be updated over time, for each client that focuses on meeting key milestones; Ability to deliver presentations and lectures for VA Bio-Connect entrepreneurship workshops; Ability to collaborate with other ICAP and life science Mentors to assist clients; Ability to assist teams with referrals to experts, resources, potential customers, and experienced entrepreneurs in your network to assist in the company's development;Demonstrated ability to assume responsibility, work without direct supervision, exercise initiative and good judgment, and make decisions within the broad scope of assigned authority;Demonstrated ability to maintain the highest standards of quality and professionalism in work habits, dress, and time management; ensure that all communications are of the highest standard; and deliver excellent quality service in the conduct of duties. Preferred Qualifications: Experience developing/commercializing biomedical, pharmaceutical, biologics, advanced materials, medical devices and/or software (5+ years);Experience seeking/receiving regulatory approval for clinical trials and commercial sales; Successful launch and exit with a company in one of the following fields:Medical devices and/or equipment Therapeutics and/or Vaccines Diagnostics Digital Health Advanced manufacturing FDA Regulations
